I referred my GP to your web site since he really did not appear to have a grasp for IBS. His nurse also wanted it because her husband suffers from similar symptoms. Trying to follow diet recommendations and having limited success. We are re-testing for some of the conditions you listed in book to make certain I do not have. Celiac-negative, re-colonscopy not able to schedule til August. I am encouraged and discouraged accepting that if I truly have IBS, which I beleive I have suffered from for over 30 years, it is just getting worse and worse and this will be my life. Thank you for your review. I think if you stick with the Tummy Fiber, you'll begin to notice some positive results.

We recommend starting with ½ teaspoon twice a day (daily dose of 1 teaspoon). You can split the daily dose up as many time as you like throughout the day, just divide it by 2 or 3 depending on the frequency you prefer. Try to increase the dose every 4th day or so by a teaspoon (add this to the daily dose). If you get increased gas and bloating by jumping the dose up by a teaspoon, try cutting this in half. Some people with IBS are so sensitive they have to go up at ¼ teaspoons every 4th day. Keep stepping up the dose every 4th day or so until you find a dose that resolves your constipation and/or diarrhea. Constipation is usually resolved with a daily dose of 4-5 tablespoons/day and diarrhea/loose stools usually resolves at a lower dose of 1-3 tablespoons/day. You shouldn’t take more than 5 tbsp/day. The maintenance dose is different for each person depending on their specific symptoms. Dietary changes are often necessary to make lasting changes. In the beginning until you stabilize, it works best to take the acacia before each meal to minimize the effect of trigger foods in the meal and to calm the intestines before the food arrives.

I would suggest reading both of Heather’s books so you can thoroughly understand all the ways to help stabilize IBS. The diet and soluble fiber will work more with the cause and help to stabilize you. Acacia helps people with diarrhea to have formed bowel movements and people with constipation to have softer and easier to pass bowel movements. People often experience significant improvement within a couple weeks when they make the dietary and fiber changes at the same time; although, constipation does take longer to resolve than diarrhea. It is not uncommon for constipation folks to increase the acacia very slowly because they are more likely to have trouble with painful gas and bloating. It can take 1-2 months to work up to the daily dose of 4-5 tablespoons/day sometimes. It will only make you miserable if you increase the dose too quickly. Important changes are taking place inside the colon as the body adjusts, so just be patient and let your body gently adjust to the acacia.

I am sorry you are not seeing results as quickly as you would like. For the Tummy Fiber Acacia to work properly, it's crucial that you start with a low dose (1/2 teaspoon twice daily) and gradually increase to a dose high enough to resolve constipation (which may be 4-5 tablespoons a day). If you get gas or bloating, that would mean you increased your dose too quickly. It can take several weeks to gradually increase up to the dose you'd likely need to resolve constipation, and unfortunately you can't rush this. Tummy Fiber is not a drug or a laxative so it won't work overnight.

I really feel for the constipation folks, as it takes some patience to start slowly, increase gradually, and eventually get your daily dose up high enough to resolve symptoms. A lower dose can't worsen constipation, but it won't resolve it, either. You may want to start over following these directions and see if you have better luck.

Having the fiber at least twice a day - and you can have it more often - is also key, as you want to keep your gut filled with soluble fiber at all times. That will help prevent cramping and spasms in the first place.

Book should be updated to reflect the products on the market now.

There have been many improvements in the products in the stores that folks with IBS can use. I make many substitutions,especially since I am lactose intolerant. Everyones tolerance is different, for instance I can tolerate meat in small quantities occasionally. I find that I need fruits in my diet to avoid becoming constipated.

Hi Loretta - the book has been updated repeatedly since first publication, but you are right, the products in grocery stores change so quickly that there is almost no way to keep that kind of information current in the book.

Hi Laura - I'm so sorry you find the peppermint tea too strong. It is deliberately very potent, as it has the highest possible volatile oil content so that it is medicinal strength peppermint. That's what makes it effective for helping IBS symptoms like painful spasms and cramps. The stronger the tea, the more effective it will be.

You could try brewing the tea for a much shorter time, or in a larger cup of water, both of which will decrease the strength. Since you have already discarded the tea I can't ask you to return it for a refund, so we will simply credit your card for the tea as if you had been able to return it.

It sounds like you are on the right track with the Acacia tummy fiber and the Peppermint Tummy Tamers. Because it can be confusing when you are getting started and trying to find the best combination and dose for you, I've included below some helpful instructions about taking the Acacia Fiber and the Peppermint Capsules:

Peppermint is contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we doubled the enteric coating on our peppermint caps because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening:

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux.

2)The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

Hi Norma - thank you very much for your feedback. Our goal with the Tummy Fiber is that it dissolves as quickly and easily as possible. But, because it is a whole, natural, organic fiber, and not extracted, refined, synthetic, or highly processed, that is sometimes more variable than we would like.

Acacia is collected much like maple syrup, though the gum is more a solid than a liquid. They are amber colored, crystal-like pieces; these pieces are what the acacia gum looks like when it is collected from the outside of the tree. The gum is then dissolved in water, filtered, and the liquid is sprayed onto very large heated surfaces to sterilize the fiber and so the water can evaporate. What's left after the water evaporates is the fine, white powder that is acacia fiber.

There are no chemicals used in processing the acacia, and every step from the orchards to the processing to our packaging facility is certified organic. Because this is a natural gum with nothing added, and not a synthetic product that is highly processed, the grain size of the finished powder can vary from lot to lot, and even within a single lot.

Even though we have specs in place for the grain size to be consistent and the optimum granularity for dissolving easily in liquids, during the packaging process the conveying and vibrating activities can sometimes separate out larger grains of the gum. This can result in a handful of finished packages of Tummy Fiber that have larger or more irregular grain sizes, which can then take longer to dissolve in liquids. We're constantly working to minimize these variations.

Hello Victoria - I'm so sorry you have received fennel seeds that have bugs. Thankfully, these little bugs are completely harmless albeit very disgusting I agree. Please discard the buggy fennel. We will send you a replacement.

Organic fennel is tricky because fennel is naturally very prone to getting bugs like this. Nonorganic fennel is treated with a lot of pesticides in the field to control this problem, but we cannot do that with organic fennel. So, we have to take steps after harvest to prevent the bug larvae coming in from the fields from ever hatching. Our method is to deep freeze the fennel for several days immediately after harvest and then continue to deep freeze the fennel after transport until we package it. This cannot prevent bug contamination in the fields in the first place, though - the farmers use ladybugs for that, which is why you sometimes see a ladybug in the finished product. And once in a while, despite all the efforts, organic fennel will still have some bug contamination that even the deep freeze does not entirely eradicate.

We care very much about our customers. We want to provide the best possible products with the greatest medicinal benefit to help manage and stabilize IBS. Sticking with organic fennel (even though it would clearly be much cheaper and easier to use nonorganic) is absolutely critical in our opinion. Our customers rely on fennel to manage their IBS symptoms and often drink several cups a day. Consuming this much nonorganic fennel would be a lot of unnecessary pesticide exposure and this is simply not acceptable to us. We continue to try and improve our options for organic fennel pest control, so we can continue to provide high-quality, super fresh, organic whole fennel seed for our Fennel Tummy Tea.

We will gladly replace the fennel you ordered and send that out to you today.

Hi Shirley - I'm so sorry the caps weren't convenient for you to take. You can actually take these just as needed, it does not have to be three caps a day. It is critical that you take them on an empty stomach, though, as they are enteric coated. They're meant to pass through your stomach intact and dissolve in your intestines.

You can take them any time your stomach is empty, as long as you wait a bit after taking them before eating.

If this is just not possible with your schedule, please do return them for a full refund.

Just about all of the recipe ingredients should be widely available at regular grocery stores, but let me know and I should have some suggestions for good alternatives to things you can't easily get locally.

There is a very wide range of recipes in the book - some are fancy enough for holiday dinner parties but many are fast and easy for quick meals. If there are ingredients you don't like you can also probably simply omit them.

I'm so sorry to hear this. People tend to either love or hate the taste of fennel. It really does work well for gas and bloating though so many people just get creative about how to take it. You can brew it with another herbal tea such as peppermint or chamomile to disguise the flavor (peppermint in particular completely kills the fennel taste).

Using honey as a sweetener really makes it taste better as well. And some folks simply brew it very strong, let it cool, and drink it quickly as they would a medicine.

If you still just hate it so much you can't even drink it, please feel feel to return it for a full refund.

Hi Debbie - I'm so sorry you are not feeling better. Can I ask your current dose of the Tummy Fiber? You would normally start with ½ teaspoon taken twice daily, and gradually increase your dose by an extra ½ teaspoon every 4-5 days. Diarrhea normally requires about one to two tablespoons per day to resolve, and the cramping should resolve with that.

If you get up to two or three tablespoons per day and you still have chronic diarrhea, that is actually a red flag for something other than IBS.

If the Tummy Fiber doesn't work for you please do return it.

I have suffered from IBS for over 40 years. I have been to many doctors, both Internists and Gastroenterologists and did not get as much relief as I have from the products I have purchases. The Peppermint Tea and capsules have really soothed the burning and cramping. The self-hypnosis has taught me to relax and take the IBS in stride and not focus so much on the pain, but learning to calm myself when a bout of IBS begins to manifest. I'm so sorry to hear you're having trouble with the Tech Ice Hot/Cold Packs. Directions for use should have been included with your order. I sincerely apologize if they were not. Please find them below. The Tech Ice Packs are extremely durable and should be able to be used for years.
Directions: To use for the first time, scrunch the sheets between your hands for a minute or so while they're completely submerged in warm water (use a very large bowl or a sink), until the air bubbles have escaped. Then simply leave the sheets submerged in the water overnight. It's helpful to weigh down the sheets with a bowl so they stay completely under water. The cells will swell (the hot pack will look like a thick quilt) and be ready for repeated use.

Re-hydration is occasionally necessary after repeated use, but it will only take about 30-60 minutes to re-hydrate a pack.

Techni Ice packs can be used hot, cold or frozen. The packs are completely washable, re-useable, and will last for years. They can be cut to any size, and stored at room temperature or (if using as cold packs) in the freezer. If you'll primarily be using the packs for heat therapy, do not store in the refrigerator or freezer, but at room temperature. Packs should not go directly from the freezer to the microwave, but should warm to room temperature first. Packs can be stored anywhere you'd keep a hot water bottle or heating pad - they do not require any special storage care.

For use as a hot pack, simply microwave the hydrated pack for 1-3 minutes or until it's as hot as you'd like. The pack must be fully hydrated before you heat it. Use pack over or under clothes, or wrapped in a towel or blanket.

Please note that the very first 2-3 times you heat the packs after they've been hydrated, there may be excess water that seeps from the packs. This can be prevented by simply microwaving the newly hydrated packs until hot, pressing them with a towel to absorb excess water, then letting them cool and repeating this process once or twice. After that there should be no excess water in the packs, and there will be no leakage at all.

For use as a cold pack, allow for a thumb-size indentation in each cell during hydration – this will give room for expansion during freezing. Techni Ice can be used as a flexible ice pack for injuries, and can be frozen down to minus 190C (more than twice as cold as dry ice).

Quite happy with service and products

Have been using recipes from your book.Found the info.on how,what and when to eat certain food very helpful.I am having less flare-ups. Peppermint Caps are a blessing.No need to take prescription med.to calm my bowels. I have a problem with Acacia fibre even when I take the minimum dosage.My head hurts and my blood pressure gets a bit elevated.I tried it twice and had the same feeling.I know the fibre is good and I want to take it.I get the same reaction if I take multivitamin or some supplements. Hi Veronica - you should definitely not get a headache or a change in blood pressure from the Tummy Fiber. It sounds like you may be allergic to it. Since you have the same problem with vitamins and other supplements, check the ingredients for those and see if they contain acacia as well (also known as gum arabic). It's unusual to be allergic to gums but certainly not impossible. I have been sick and mostly in bed for 2 yrs with IBS, I also have Fibromyalgia which is well under control. The IBS has sent me to the ER at least once every 2 months for the last 2 years. I was to the point that I just wanted to give up. So when we came across your site and products we thought why not. With in a week I was almost pain free, I have had a couple of flairs, but I just eat bread and drink water for a day and am usually back on track. With Eating for IBS, I tried to include a very wide range of recipes in the book - some are fancy enough for holiday dinner parties but many are fast and easy for quick meals. If there are specific ingredients you don't like you can probably simply omit them.

If you give me an idea of what kind of cooking you're looking for I can also suggest specific recipes in the book for you that would be fast, easy, inexpensive, and simple.

Not working well for me

I was very excited to try the Tummy Fiber and very hopeful that it would help me. However, it has not worked for me. First let me tell you that I have been diagnosed with IBS and have also been diagnosed with Gastroparesis. I do not have diarrhea, if anything, I have constipation (or lack of movement since my stomach only empties every 5 hours). I have a very healthy diet and eat very little at a time. When I read on your website that the Tummy Fiber would help with diarrhea OR constipation I was thrilled. I started with 1 teaspoon twice a day. It slowed things down even more, bulked up my stool, actually making my situation worse. And yes, I am trying to follow your soluble, insoluble, stay away from trigger foods plan. I do everything I know to do and nothing helps. I feel so helpless. Nothing works, nothing helps, nothing makes it better. :(

I'm so sorry to hear you're still struggling with constipation. For how long have you been taking the Tummy Fiber? Are you currently taking 2 teaspoons a day? Typically, a resolving dose for individuals suffering from constipation will fall between 3 and 5 tablespoons. As the Tummy Fiber will not cause constipation or diarrhea, it may be the case that you need to reach a higher dose before experiencing symptom relief. I would recommend continuing with the Tummy Fiber and gradually increasing your dose by 1/2 to 1 teaspoon every 4 to 5 days. I think, as your daily dose increases, you will begin to see positive results. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you further or if you have any additional questions.

I looked at some of the recipes in the book and was a little disappointed that there were so many recipes with sugar and white flour in them. I also have candida and other issues that I should not have either. When you have IBS I think other issues go along with it, at least for me.

Hi Davina - please feel free to alter the recipes if you have any sugar or white flour concerns. Sugar is not an IBS trigger, so I include it in dessert and some baking recipes so people can have a safe splurge. You can certainly just avoid desserts altogether, or reduce the sugar, or use stevia. Don't use artificial sweeteners, though, as they all can cause GI side effects.

White flour is a safe form of wheat for IBS, as it has soluble fiber but the insoluble fiber from the bran has been removed. Whole wheat flour would not be a safe staple, and not a good substitute for white flour in baking recipes. If you want to avoid white flour altogether choose other soluble fiber foods as staples: rice, cooked root veggies, polenta or cornmeal, oats, quinoa, tapioca, etc.

What's most important is that you avoid the trigger foods, use soluble fiber foods as your foundation to keep your gut calm, and use that foundation to carefully add in as many insoluble fiber foods as you can tolerate. Within those guidelines you have a great deal of flexibility, so please feel free to modify recipes to your own tastes.

Best product for gas that I know of.
I drink 2-3 cups of this tea a day, either using tea bags or if I'm feeling economical, the loose tea in a tea ball. It works wonderfully for gas which is one of my big problems. I drink it with or just after meals and it does the trick. It is very fresh and flavorful (much more so than any fennel tea I've bought elsewhere) and there is a lot of fennel seed packed into each tea bag (also more than other brands of fennel tea).

I got the Starter Kit after trying the Peppermint oil to find out more about what I was experiencing. I'm so sorry to hear this. People tend to either love or hate the taste of fennel. It really does work well for gas and bloating though so many people just get creative about how to take it. You can brew it with another herbal tea such as peppermint or chamomile to disguise the flavor (peppermint in particular completely kills the fennel taste).

Using honey as a sweetener really makes it taste better as well. And some folks simply brew it very strong, let it cool, and drink it quickly as they would a medicine.

If you still just hate it so much you can't even drink it, please feel feel to return it for a full refund.

Peppermint caps

I am trying different ways to use the peppermint caps. They seem to cause a lot of heartburn, more than I usually have. I've followed all the recommendations so far and just wondered if there were some food tips that it might be good to pair it with to reduce or eliminate that. I emailed about 10 days ago and haven't gotten a response. I'd like them to work, but so far not.

I am so sorry we missed your email! Customer service is very important to us and we strive to have great interactions with our customers.

I am also sorry the Tummy Tamers Peppermint Capsules are upsetting your heartburn. The capsules are enteric coated so they will pass through your stomach intact and dissolve in your intestines. They should not dissolve in your stomach at all, and certainly should not cause loose bowels (they should actually be helpful for this, and preventing/relieving urgency and diarrhea).

Did you take a capsule on an empty stomach with just enough cool water to swallow? The enteric coating is acid resistant but water soluble, so if you take the cap with a lot of water, or if it sits too long in your stomach because your stomach is full, the capsule can eventually dissolve. We've also found the enteric coating is particularly susceptible to hot water, so you don't want to take the capsules with tea or another hot beverage.

If you are simply unable to take the caps, please do feel free to return them for a full refund at any time, open bottles or not, to:

You may be able to tolerate the Peppermint Tummy Tea instead of the capsules. The tea is not as concentrated as the caps, but it will work more quickly, whereas the caps are best as a preventative. You can also use the tea on a full stomach, whereas the caps must be taken on an empty stomach.

I ordered this diet kit and my credit card was charged soon after, however, it took much longer than I thought for it to be delivered. The tummy fiber is absolutely wonderful, it makes such a difference. I take it in the mornings before I eat, and in the evenings before I go to bed. The peppermint capsules are great too, but they bother my reflux if it is acting up. The book is great information all in one place, and the recipes are easy and delicious.
