I am not sure if this is the specific Metamucil product you are using, but the flavoring and fillers in many Metamucil products can actually trigger IBS symptoms (especially the sugar free products, which contain artificial sweeteners like aspartame). Also these fillers and flavorings make up 2/3 of what you are paying for.

I wish I hadn't opened both bottles

I was desparate for help, so opened one bottle for the kitchen and one for the bathroom. I just couldn't tell any difference in my diahrrea-constipation problem. I quit taking them and would like to return them, but opened both bottles!

Very satisfied
I haven't been able to find fennel tea, nor fennel seeds other than in the small jars in the spice aisle, in any of my local stores. These tea bags are a better alternative to me steeping the loose seeds. I like the flavor and also use the fennel teabag with an herb tea bag. It might be nice for the fennel bags which are very large to also come in a smaller size.

Fennel Tummy Tea
I have using Heather's tummy tea fir several months now, and I live by it. I've suffered with IBS since I was a teenager and this tea helps with the spasms, gas and bloating that I encounter after meals...what I now do is drink a cup of Fennel tea first thing in the morning and I feel better after my meal. Also I like to drink a cup before bed. Thank you Heather for your wonderful products if I hadn't found your site I would still be suffering at the level I was at, I now have some weapons to fight thus horrible, uncomfortable and life altering desease. It works!
I titered up more slowly since I tend to be very sensitive to everything. This product does really work for constipation dominant IBS. I was terribly bloated with other products and this gave the least side effects of anything I have tried and I am not even sure there are side effects because my gastrointestinal system really acts up sometimes for no reason. Now, I no longer have hard, dry stools. Great product. The fennel tea also helps.

easy to mix , still trying to regulate constipation.

I don't suffer with diarrhea, Have used for couple weeks, twice daily, but still have not relieved constipation . Still hopeful.

Hi Daria - For the Tummy Fiber Acacia to work properly, it's crucial that you start with a low dose (1/2 teaspoon twice daily) and gradually increase to a dose high enough to resolve constipation (which may likely be 4-5 tablespoons a day).

If you get gas or bloating, that would mean you increased your dose too quickly. It can take several weeks or even a few months to gradually increase up to the dose you'd likely need to resolve constipation, and unfortunately you can't rush this. Tummy Fiber is not a drug or a laxative so it won't work overnight.

I really feel for the constipation folks, as it takes some patience to start slowly, increase gradually, and eventually get your daily dose up high enough to resolve symptoms. A lower dose can't worsen constipation, but it won't resolve it, either.

Having the fiber at least twice a day - and you can have it more often - is also key, as you want to keep your gut filled with soluble fiber at all times. That will help prevent cramping and spasms in the first place.

Tummy fiber review

I was skeptical when beginning it, as it seemed to cause loose stools, but then I read some info on the forums about starting at a lower dose and that seemed to help. I am up to 1/4 tsp. twice a day and things seem to be going well. This combined with changing my diet and eating habits I have stopped taking my prescribed bentnyl....yay! Yours is the best book I have found!

Hello Heather. I cannot say enough good things about the products I purchased. My husband suffered so badly from IBS that he feared leaving home, and pretty much did not. About a year and a half ago, I discovered your web site, and since his doctor pretty much gave up on anything except the Rx he gave him, decided to try the Peppermint Caps and late the fiber. Thanks to these products, his life totally changed in about a week. Since then, he has an incident once a month or less and is free to live his life, and instead of taking the med from 4x per day, he's down to 2 and will further reduce it to just once very soon. When we told his doctor, he basically "blew us off." How many ways can I say Bless you, Heather!

This Product Has Helped Me Enormously
Ihave used this product on and off for several years. When the stress level gets high and the food intake becomes random, Heather's Pepermint Caps help me get through with less pain and better digestion. Not ready to rate

I have been using the Tummy Fiber and have also gone Gluten Free. I feel like the Tummy Fiber has "stopped" me up but it may have to do with the new diet.

The Tummy Fiber should not cause constipation or diarrhea. Please make sure you start with a low dose and gradually increase by 1/2 teaspoon every 4-5 days. If you increase too quickly you will not see the results you are looking for.

You are correct, though, sudden and drastic changes to your diet can affect your bowel movements. Make sure you are eating plenty of soluble fiber and are staying away from the trigger foods. Also, insoluble fiber foods are important to your diet, but please make sure you are cooking, chopping, or pureeing the insoluble fiber foods and eating them with soluble fiber.

I have truly been enjoying every product in this kit. It was a great way to get started. The tea is very fresh and the aroma from the tea bags is intoxicating in the best way. Wouldn't want to be without the tummy fiber

I order the tummy fiber several times a year because I know I feel so much better when I mix some in water every day and drink it. I try to think ahead, so I never run out. I have a busy job and lots to do at home, so I don't always have time to cook potatoes and lots of veggies. I was diagnosed with IBS this past May, after 2 other doctors spent all of last year trying to figure out what was wrong. This doctor did the food sensitivity testing and I eliminated 27 foods. Then eliminated all the FODMAPS. Was eating massive amounts of vegetable to combat constipation. This caused a lot of cramping. Tried Metamucil and that really caused cramping. Luckily, a friend had given me Heather's book "The First Year IBS" and I came to this site and these products. They were delivered right away and so I could switch to the Acacia fiber. What a difference. Lessens rather than increases cramping. The tea and peppermint capsules also help, and following her diet advice has done more for me than all the eliminations. I am so very happy! All is not perfect, and it may never be, but I am not in despair any more.

IT WORKS!
For years I have been taking ultra Gas X before bedtime because alot of times I get trapped gas in the middle of the night. It is so painful that I can't move - like labor pains! Hello Jennifer,

I am so sorry you were getting indigestion from the Tummy Tamers. Peppermint is contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we use 50% more enteric coating than the industry standard because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening.

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

On a related note, not being able to tolerate the enteric coated peppermint oil capsules because they are dissolving in the stomach and causing heartburn or peppermint burping might indicate low stomach acid. In naturopathic medicine, heartburn is often thought to be caused by low stomach acid which causes the undigested food to sit in the stomach too long and create pressure. It can also contribute to inadequately digested protein in the stomach. This can disrupt the digestive process downstream as well. If you followed the tips I listed above and still experienced heartburn, you might want to follow up with a provider to test your stomach acid levels. A naturopath or nutritionist would probably be the best type of provider to address this for you.

The other thing that can cause some people to have to difficulty using the peppermint oil capsules is a sensitivity to the natural compounds in peppermint such as salicylates. The peppermint oil is very concentrated and contains a higher amount of these natural compounds than you would consume in a cup of tea. People who have a sensitivity seem to experience burning in the intestines when they take the peppermint caps. It may come as a surprise because until the peppermint capsules, they've probably never noticed a sensitivity like this because they've honestly never consumed the compounds in this amount before.

Of course if you are unable to take the peppermint oil capsules, please feel free to return them even if you have used part of the bottle. I am sorry to hear you may not be getting the results you hoped. Do you suffer from IBS-C? If so, you can find some great tips for IBS-C here: http://www.helpforibs.com/footer/constipation.asp

For the Tummy Fiber Acacia to work properly, it's crucial that you start with a low dose (1/2 teaspoon twice daily) and gradually increase to a dose high enough to resolve constipation (which may be 3-5 tablespoons a day). If you get gas or bloating, that would mean you increased your dose too quickly. It can take several weeks to gradually increase up to the dose you'd likely need to resolve constipation, and unfortunately you can't rush this. Tummy Fiber is not a drug or a laxative so it won't work overnight.

I really feel for the constipation folks, as it takes some patience to start slowly, increase gradually, and eventually get your daily dose up high enough to resolve symptoms. A lower dose can't worsen constipation, but it won't resolve it, either. You may want to start over following these directions and see if you have better luck.

Having the fiber at least twice a day - and you can have it more often - is also key, as you want to keep your gut filled with soluble fiber at all times. That will help prevent cramping and spasms in the first place.

12 years old and somewhat out of date.

No mention of possible Celiac disease nor wheat sensitivity causing IBS symptoms. I followed the IBS diet for about 5 days and got progressively worse. Only by doing research and eliminating wheat did I find some relief. Doctors are very ignorant about these conditions. I would recommend that the IBS book be updated to include wheat sensitivity.

Hi Anne - thank you for your feedback. Celiac is actually listed in the book (and on this website) as one of the disorders that has to be ruled out for a diagnosis of IBS. Gluten intolerance (celiac) is a separate issue from IBS, and Eating for IBS is not focused on celiac or gluten intolerance. You can combine both dietary issues if you need to, that's not super uncommon, but most people with IBS do not also have celiac. They are two different disorders.

The book does address the issue with whole wheat, due to the insoluble fiber in wheat bran, that comes up with IBS, and you'll notice that the recipes do not use whole wheat. The wheat bran/insoluble fiber issue is distinct from a true wheat intolerance or gluten sensitivity, however.

If the book doesn't fit your needs you are certainly welcome to return it.

I love the Tummy Tammers! I had already been using an enteric coated peppermint oil pill from Whole Foods, however, I like Heathers a lot more. These help out so much. I have very bad IBS and have had it from an early age. I am now 38 (female) and have tried almost everything under the sun. I take tummy tammers 3X a day (before breakfast, lunch and dinner)I also make sure to eat SOLUBLE fiber before each meal and it has helped tremendously! Believe it or not, I even have a miniature Twix or Kit Kat (Halloween size) candy bar every night before bed. Sometimes I wish I hadn't more more times out of most, I'm just fine. This is my 4th day of taking caps. I've taken 2 a day on an empty stomach - one when I get up in the morning and then another at some point in the day after I've waited two hours since my previous meal. I also wait at least an hour before eating again. I take with a few sips of cool water but I think I'm beginning to have discomfort in my throat. I hope heartburn isn't returning. How long does one have to wait after taking the pill before normal drinking? If I'm exercising or whatever, I like to drink a glass of water or other liquid.
