I start my day with this tea every morning (before I eat anything) and I have several cups each day and before bed. I don't really enjoy the flavor but it does calm my tummy. When I think of this tea as my "tummy medicine" and not as "tea time", it's ok and I'm glad for it. I received my delivery within days. The canister is tightly sealed, well made and pretty enough to leave out. It was packed the day I ordered it. The bags are fresh and generously filled with whole leaves. The taste is too strong for me so I crush the bag to get the most out of the oils and then brew for a just a minute. The quality of the product is impressive. Wrong product for my problem
It turned out I am gluten intolerant and my stomach pain went away when I stopped eating wheat products. It is really hard to rate the effectiveness of the peppermint pills because of this.

I was misled in believing that Fennel Tummy teabags relieved bloating and gas, it worked as a laxative for me.e

I have had IBS for 2 1/2 years and have struggled every day with pain, gas and bloating. I finally tried this Fennel Tea thinking it would help. I was wrong! This tea did absolutely nothing to help me. I am very upset. I have tried everything.

It also helps at first to drink as many cups a day for the first few days as you can manage. That will "overwhelm" your gut with fennel and help you get on top of the bloating and gas.

For abdominal pain, you may want to try peppermint tea. Both peppermint tea and fennel tea will help to relax the gut and relieve symptoms such as pain, cramping, gas and bloating.

Was somewhat disappointed but did not give a bad rating because the reason was partly due to an allergy to soy and any form of sugar. I found only a few recipes that I would want to cook. I would like to see more recipes for casseroles or alternatives to popular food like pizza and pasta.

Hi Sandra - thanks so much for your feedback. Please feel free to use any non-dairy substitutes instead of soy. There are lots of great rice, almond, oat, and hemp milk alternatives now, and they are just fine for IBS.

I'm not sure if these will fit the bill for you, but there are pizza and pasta recipes in the book. Check pages 219-223 for pizza, and 208-218 plus 134-138 for pasta and noodle dishes.

Not at all satisfied with the way it doesn't dissolve.

Do you have a trick to make this product dissolve? I have stirred it into both cold and hot liquids both small and large amounts of liquid and cannot get it to dissolve in a short time. Sometimes there is some left on the spoon even when I think it is all dissolved. It really discourages me from using the product at all and I hate to see my money wasted.

Hi Jeanne,

I'm so sorry you're having difficulty getting the Tummy Fiber to dissolve. The Tummy Fiber is certified organic, all natural gum of the acacia tree - also known as gum arabic. We have actually sourced the exact same organic Acacia Senegal grade from the same supplier from the time our company was founded. It is collected much like maple syrup, though the gum is more a solid than a liquid. They are amber colored, crystal-like pieces; these pieces are what the acacia gum looks like when it is collected from the outside of the tree. The gum is then dissolved in water, filtered, and the liquid is sprayed onto very large heated surfaces to sterilize the fiber and so the water can evaporate. What's left after the water evaporates is the fine, white powder that is acacia fiber.

There are no chemicals used in processing the acacia, and every step from the orchards to the processing to our packaging facility is certified organic. Because this is a natural gum with nothing added, and not a synthetic product that is highly processed, the grain size of the finished powder can vary from lot to lot, and even within a single lot. Even though we have specs in place for the grain size to be consistent and the optimum granularity for dissolving easily in liquids, during the packaging process the conveying and vibrating activities can sometimes separate out larger grains of the gum. This can result in a handful of finished packages of Tummy Fiber that have larger or more irregular grain sizes, which can then take longer to dissolve in liquids.

I'm including a list of tips we've come up with over the years to help fully dissolve the acacia in liquids or moist foods.

TIPS TO DISSOLVE TUMMY FIBER

1) It works best if the liquid temperature is cool or lukewarm, not very cold or boiling hot

2) Add Tummy Fiber to an empty cup, mix it with add just enough liquid to dissolve it, then add the remaining liquid

3) Stir with a fork instead of a spoon

4) After stirring initially, let it sit for about 60 seconds, then stir again and any remaining lumps should dissolve

5) Sprinkle on moist foods while stirring it in instead of adding a big spoonful all at once

If you are still unable to use the Tummy Fiber and are at all unhappy, please let us know and we will replace or refund the product.

Hi Ann - I'm so sorry to hear you're still struggling. Please make sure you started with a Tummy Fiber dose of ½ teaspoon twice daily, and that you are gradually increasing that dose by an extra ½ teaspoon every 4 days or so.

Diarrhea typically resolves at 1-3 tablespoons total per day, but you do have to reach those higher doses gradually. If you resolve at a lower dose, just stay there. You can continue to take Imodium with the fiber, that is not a problem at all. As your fiber dose increases and diarrhea resolves, you should be able to transition off the Imodium.

I am getting acid reflex from the tea and pills

The fennel tea should be mildly helpful for acid reflux, and certainly won't hurt it.

Peppermint, however, is contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we use 50% more enteric coating than the industry standard because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening.

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

Of course if you are unable to take the peppermint oil capsules or the tea, please feel free to return them even if you have used part of the bottle. I'm so glad I found these products....

All the information I've received has been more helpful than anything my doctors have told me. I am eating the IBS Diet way, using the fennel tea (can't do peppermint) using the fiber. I don't care for the recipes for entrees....don't care for the spices, fish, tofu, etc....but I am using the information to make up my own. I love the breads.... I'm staying away from all desserts..and so far, that is ok. Thanks for all the help!

You are right on the money to use the diet info in the book to suit your own tastes, and modify your own favorite recipes. That is the whole point of the guidelines, so that everyone can cook and eat both safely and deliciously, whatever their food preferences. You can also adjust the recipes in the book to suit you, and substitute the herbs and spices you prefer, or omit seasonings altogether, etc.

You might also check out the chicken entrée recipes, as those almost all come from my grandmother, so they are very much all-American traditional style dinner dishes. Or swap out chicken for fish in the seafood recipes, or chicken for tofu in the vegetarian dishes, etc. It is up to you and what you like best!

Hi Marjorie - as long as you're taking the pep caps one hour before, or two hours after, a meal that would be considered on an empty stomach. Lots of folks find it easiest to take one first thing in the morning, and then again (if needed) an hour before lunch or dinner. You can also add one in last thing before you go to bed.

If you're not prone to heartburn or reflux, you may also be able to take one on an empty stomach just 10-15 minutes before you eat.

Tummy fiber and tummy tea rock!

I have used Heather's Tummy Tea and Tummy Fiber for years. I was originally diagnosed with Celiac and IBS. I found Heather's site and started on the tummy fiber and fennel tea. Finally got the IBS under control and, long story short, I was then told it was not Celiac but a severe case of Hypocalcemia. This condition can also create IBS. Hi Tracy,

I'm so sorry you are having trouble with the pep caps. Peppermint is contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we use 50% more enteric coating than the industry standard because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening.

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they’ll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn’t take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

On a related note, not being able to tolerate the enteric coated peppermint oil capsules because they are dissolving in the stomach and causing heartburn or peppermint burping might indicate low stomach acid. In naturopathic medicine, heartburn is often thought to be caused by low stomach acid which causes the undigested food to sit in the stomach too long and create pressure. It can also contribute to inadequately digested protein in the stomach. This can disrupt the digestive process downstream as well. If you followed the tips I listed above and still experienced heartburn, you might want to follow up with a provider to test your stomach acid levels. A naturopath or nutritionist would probably be the best type of provider to address this for you.

The other thing that can cause some people to have to difficulty using the peppermint oil capsules is a sensitivity to the natural compounds in peppermint such as salicylates. The peppermint oil is very concentrated and contains a higher amount of these natural compounds than you would consume in a cup of tea. People who have a sensitivity seem to experience burning in the intestines when they take the peppermint caps. It may come as a surprise because until the peppermint capsules, they’ve probably never noticed a sensitivity like this because they’ve honestly never consumed the compounds in this amount before.

Of course if you are unable to take the peppermint oil capsules, please feel free to return them for a full refund even if you have used part of the bottle.

Hi WJ - I'm so sorry you aren't seeing better results from the Tummy Fiber.

I do recommend starting with just ½ level teaspoon twice a day (daily dose of 1 teaspoon). You can split the daily dose up as many time as you like throughout the day, just divide it by 2 or 3 depending on the frequency you prefer. Try to increase the dose every 4th day or so by a teaspoon (add this to the daily dose).

If you get increased gas and bloating by jumping the dose up by a teaspoon, try cutting this in half. Some people with IBS are so sensitive they have to go up at ¼ teaspoons every 4th day. Keep stepping up the dose every 4th day or so until you find a dose that resolves your constipation and/or diarrhea.

Constipation is usually resolved with a daily dose of 4-5 tablespoons/day and diarrhea/loose stools usually resolves at a lower dose of 1-3 tablespoons/day. You shouldn't take more than 5 tbsp/day. The maintenance dose is different for each person depending on their specific symptoms.

Dietary changes are often necessary to make lasting changes. In the beginning until you stabilize, it works best to take the acacia before each meal to minimize the effect of trigger foods in the meal and to calm the intestines before the food arrives.

If you are unable to use the fiber or remain unhappy with it, by all means please do return it for a full refund.

The only thing they gave me was immodium or pepto bismol. I lost 17 lbs, became anemic, my total proteins dropped normal, and I felt that I might die. I ordered the Acacia fiber and the diet book. Slowly my diarrhea stopped and I began to be able to eat food again. Before I was using my stored fat to supply energy for my body. I lost from 130 to 113 lbs. One NP told me that basically there was nothing wrong with me. At the end of my ordeal, they did do an IBD panel and some immune markers came back positive. It was them revealed to me, when my colonscopy was performed that I had an area of inflammatiom, but it did not fit the textbook picture. All in all, I feel the medical community let me down medically and I am so thankful I found Heather's website. I continue on the fiber and the recipes.

no difference...

I've tried about 30 days with all possibilities (1 hour before breakfast, 10 minutes before breakfast,etc..), but there is no difference. The only thing that makes difference is diet... but for me, I can eat milk product without crisis. Accupuncture have made a big diffence too, 15 years ago, I had to take about 10 imodium per day, because after each meal I had diarea, now it happens about once per week, mostly when I go to restaurant. So I think it's mostly stress who gives me diahrea. sorry for my english. and I am happy that this product help people who have this problem, but for me, it makes no difference. bye bye, I'm near Montréal. :-)

As far as the dairy goes, even though you may not see immediate flare ups from it, I do think it may be triggering your diarrhea symptoms. Check out this article from one of our previous newsletters about dairy products here: http://www.helpforibs.com/news/newsletter/06/020706.html#askheather . I would try eliminating dairy for a while (there are lots of non-dairy alternatives, like soy, rice, or almond milk) and see if you see improvement. My guess is that you will!

doesn't works for me, it aggraves my diarea crisis

I bought 3 pouches because I have confidence but I lost money because I've used only one bag. Before I take it, I had one crisis per week or 2 week, but after I began to take this, I had crises every 2 days, and I take it exactly as described. Now, since I had stopped to take it, I feel better, one crises per week...mostly when I go to restaurant, so I suppose it's because of stress. But I'm happy that this product works for some people who have diarea...but for me, only diet can help...but I can drink milk and cheese without problem (I drink about 2 litres of skim milk per day) but many vegetables and fruits I cannot eat because right after I have crise. As an aside, dairy is one of the top IBS triggers, and it will be very difficult for you to stop diarrhea if you're drinking 2 liters of milk a day. Please at least try cutting out dairy to see if it helps you.

Fails to fully dissolve

unlike the can version, the packet, even when using hot water, clots. after vigorous stirring at the beginning and then every 3 or 4 minutes, there white lumps attached to the fork and the side of the glass. i am terribly disappointed with the pouch acacia. i would like to return the two remaining bags, at my expense, and then order another can.

The cans and pouches are filled with the exact same acacia fiber. We actually package them at the same time, so you could get the same lot in a can as well as a pouch. It isn't the packaging that is making the difference here, it is the lot number.

The Tummy Fiber is certified organic, all natural gum of the acacia tree - also known as gum arabic. We have actually sourced the exact same organic Acacia Senegal grade from the same supplier from the time our company was founded. It is collected much like maple syrup, though the gum is more a solid than a liquid. They are amber colored, crystal-like pieces; these pieces are what the acacia gum looks like when it is collected from the outside of the tree. The gum is then dissolved in water, filtered, and the liquid is sprayed onto very large heated surfaces to sterilize the fiber and so the water can evaporate. What's left after the water evaporates is the fine, white powder that is acacia fiber.

There are no chemicals used in processing the acacia, and every step from the orchards to the processing to our packaging facility is certified organic. Because this is a natural gum with nothing added, and not a synthetic product that is highly processed, the grain size of the finished powder can vary from lot to lot, and even within a single lot. Even though we have specs in place for the grain size to be consistent and the optimum granularity for dissolving easily in liquids, during the packaging process the conveying and vibrating activities can sometimes separate out larger grains of the gum. This can result in a handful of finished packages of Tummy Fiber that have larger or more irregular grain sizes, which can then take longer to dissolve in liquids.

I'm including a list of tips we've come up with over the years to help fully dissolve the acacia in liquids or moist foods.

TIPS TO DISSOLVE TUMMY FIBER

1) It works best if the liquid temperature is cool or lukewarm, not very cold or boiling hot

2) Add Tummy Fiber to an empty cup, mix it with add just enough liquid to dissolve it, then add the remaining liquid

3) Stir with a fork instead of a spoon

4) After stirring initially, let it sit for about 60 seconds, then stir again and any remaining lumps should dissolve

5) Sprinkle on moist foods while stirring it in instead of adding a big spoonful all at once

If you are still unable to use the Tummy Fiber and are at all unhappy, please let us know and we will replace or refund the product.

I've skimmed the book and find the principals helpful. However, I live alone and many of the recipes are for much larger families. Also I simply do better with "' 4 or 5" ingredient or less type of cookbooks.

I really found Heather's IBS Acacia fiber @ 1/2 tsp twice a day, the fennel and peppermint teas very helpful for getting relief. I had an acture attach, which may have been both IBS and gall bladder, In addition to Heather's above products I also did a gall bladder cleanse of juicing 1/3rd beet, 2 carrots and 1/2 cucumber once or twice a day. Anyway, I'm OK now. I plan to continue using the Heather's Acacia fiber @ 1/2 tsp twice a day and fennel tea, which I can get at my health food store @ Westwood Village shopping center, Seattle.

Hi Nancy - thank you so much for your feedback! You can actually easily halve most, if not all, of the recipes in Eating for IBS. They have all been tested both ways, and I typically do this myself as I'm usually only cooking for two people.

Many of the recipes were originally meant to make two servings, but for publication the publisher wanted an average of 4 servings per recipe, so I had to test doubling the smaller recipes.

If you want very simple, fast and easy recipes, there are a lot of them in the book but I also focused specifically on that for the Heather Cooks DVD, in response to reader requests. Hi Barbara - thanks so much for your feedback. The fennel tea will work best for bloating if you "overwhelm" your gut with it the first few days. Drink as much as you can, all day long, for the first 2-3 days. That should get bloating under control and then you can drop down to a few cups per day.

The fiber will also help bloating as it gets constipation under control. Constipation does often require a higher dose range of the fiber, but you have to increase your dose gradually, so this can take some patience (which is easier to say than to live with, I know).

Typically people start with ½ teaspoon twice daily, and then add an extra ½ tsp to one of those doses every 4-5 days. Keep gradually increasing until constipation resolves. That may end up taking 3-5 tablespoons per day, but get there gradually. It's okay if this takes a few weeks or even months - a slow and steady increase is much more likely to work than trying to take too much, too quickly. The fiber is not a drug or a laxative, so it won't work overnight.

The pep caps are best for preventing IBS pain, spasms, and cramps. They have to be taken on an empty stomach, as they need to reach your intestines before they dissolve. I find them most helpful before meals, especially restaurant meals. Those can just be taken as needed. The fennel tea can also be taken as needed, but the Tummy Fiber really needs to be taken twice a day, every day, in order to increase to the dose you need and then to keep constipation at bay.

Rating is a 3 these days as I am having much trouble.

I have had IBS C for many years and now it is much worse. Dr says my age is a part of it, I'm 84, and I have very bad constipation daily. I try to follow the diet but am getting nowhere.My straining to have a bm caused palpitations for an hour one day, and nose bleeding on several occasions. I'm not able to take laxatives because of bad side effects, so I try walking but I'm stil in big trouble. Do you have any suggestions for me?

Hi Bette - what is your current daily dose of the acacia, and are you taking it twice daily? Constipation does require a gradual increase to a higher end of the dose range, which may be anywhere from 2 to 5 tablespoons per day total. You do need to reach those doses gradually, though.

I live in Canada and ordering from US is a little slow but I do have a contact in Ontario so probably will use them.

The tummy fibre has been a god send for me. After having 5 different antibotics my GI tract was totally out of whack. Developed IBS, food intolerances, etc. After 3 months on tummy fibre I am 95% better. I am very happy with the product and would highly recommend.

I liked the explanation and list of foods. The receipes were not to my liking. We do not eat many of the types of food presented. I have found substitues for the bad foods, such as gluten free and dairy free parducts in the stores. I would like to make a meatloaf using the good fats.

The product works!!!
I have not been diagnosed with IBS but started to have stomach issues when I did not eat a bland diet. I have had tests and so far nothing is wrong. It is very difficult however when you have to run to the ladies room a number of times during the day. I would say I have the symptoms of IBS-D. The first time I tried the fiber I took too much at once. I so wanted it to work. I then carefully took small amounts and gradually increased it to 1 tablespoon three times a day. It's great to be able to take a natural product and get away from the Imodium. I still have to watch my diet but have been able to add some more vegetables and a small amount of red meat into my diet. Thanks to all… Susan

I'm so sorry to hear this. The teas really do work well for pain, cramping, gas and bloating though so some people just get creative about how to take them. You can brew them with another herbal teas to disguise the flavor and even mix the fennel and peppermint tea together. The peppermint tea has a wonderful taste, to most, and will completely disguise the fennel tea taste.

Using honey as a sweetener really makes it taste better as well. And some folks simply brew it very strong, let it cool, and drink it quickly as they would a medicine.

You can also mix in soy, rice or almond milk to help cut the taste.

If you still just hate it so much you can't even drink it, please feel to return it for a full refund.

The first time my wife had a cup of Fennel jumbo Tea Bags she noticed some minor relieve. She increased her tea intake to three cups a day and she states now no relieve noticed. Hi Robert - I am so sorry your wife is not feeling better. Is she trying to address bloating and gas? Those are the symptoms best helped by the fennel tea.

Sometimes it is helpful for people to try and "overwhelm" the bloating and gas with 6-7 cups a day for the first few days. Then they can drop back to a reasonable amount of a few cups a day to keep things under control.

If this does not work for her, please do return the tea for a refund.

NO MORE SEVERE ATTACKS
I tried the peppermint capsules and discovered that I had no more severe IBS attacks. You know the kind: Where you double over in pain and your mouth starts that incredibly uncontrollable salivating. Unfortunately, the tear notches are fairly small and may be hard to see. But when they are there, it makes opening the Travel Packets very easy!

My son has Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome and IBS. We despaired over a product that could help one or the other so he could lead a more normal life. This fiber changed our world.
