Hello Andrea,

I am so sorry you have not noticed results from the Tummy Fiber yet.

Depending on your symptoms, it may take several weeks to reach a resolving daily dose of the Tummy Fiber. Taking too much acacia too fast can cause increased gas and bloating. Acacia is one of the lowest gas-forming fibers out there and going slow makes the gas issue totally avoidable. Please be patient because this really does work.

We recommend starting with ½ teaspoon twice a day (daily dose of 1 teaspoon). You can split the daily dose up as many time as you like throughout the day, just divide it by 2 or 3 depending on the frequency you prefer. Try to increase the dose every 4th day or so by a teaspoon (add this to the daily dose). If you get increased gas and bloating by jumping the dose up by a teaspoon, try cutting this in half. Some people with IBS are so sensitive they have to go up at ¼ teaspoons every 4th day. Keep stepping up the dose every 4th day or so until you find a dose that resolves your constipation and/or diarrhea. Constipation is usually resolved with a daily dose of 4-5 tablespoons/day and diarrhea/loose stools usually resolves at a lower dose of 1-3 tablespoons/day. You shouldn't take more than 5 tbsp/day. The maintenance dose is different for each person depending on their specific symptoms. Dietary changes are often necessary to make lasting changes. In the beginning until you stabilize, it works best to take the acacia before each meal to minimize the effect of trigger foods in the meal and to calm the intestines before the food arrives.

You may need to keep increasing your daily dose to notice more results. I will also personally email you to continue this conversation if you have further questions.

Hi Lynn - I am so sorry to hear this. You are certainly welcome to return the caps for a full refund, open or unopened.

I do have some tips for using the caps if you'd like to try them, as they can be a little finicky.

Start with one cap per day, and work up to 2-3 per day if needed. They work best taken in advance of anticipated trouble - before restaurant meals, last thing at night before bed if mornings are rough, etc.

Also try:

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

I've had a couple bouts that lasted 6 hr with extreme pain, chills, vomiting. The fennel tea didn't touch it. I need time folling the diet plan before deciding. However, I love the quality of everything. The teas are strong and wonderful. I like the powder because it doesn't get thick. This has come on over the years and nows it's a real problem, but knowing what to eat is going to help a lot. I have a lot to learn.

Hi Anne - Thank you so much for your feedback. I am so sorry you go through such extreme IBS attacks. I get hit with the same kind of pain, and it is just horrifying. When you are hit with that kind of extreme reaction, go to the Peppermint Tummy Tea, not the fennel. The fennel is great for gas and bloating, but peppermint is best for pain and spasms. Brew it strong and hot (you can even use two of the jumbo teabags per cup, so it will brew black). Sip as much as you can, and it should stop the pain in minutes (sometimes even seconds).

To recover from an attack like that, use the "breaking the cycle" info in Eating for IBS.

The dietary changes and Tummy Fiber take longer to kick in, but the teas and peppermint oil capsules can help right away. Use the capsules on an empty stomach to prevent pain and spasms, but turn to the tea for immediate help.

The capsules did not help me.

I was pleased to note that the capsules functioned as advertised, i.e., they did not open too early, so I was spared heartburn (I have GERD). Unfortunately, not only did the capsules not help, they made my IBS symptoms worse. I had to stop taking them.

For years I was told by doctors to eat fiber, broccoli, califlower, celery, apples, etc. For 20+ years I looked for every restroom in every building I entered. When I was 62, my mother told me her father had always peeled apples and called the skins poison. I was intriqued. I came across some literature by Heather and she said don't eat the skins. So I read on. I realized I had IBS. And I learned about soluble and insoluble fiber. I tried the acacia powder. It took 1 month but it changed my life. I told my doctor and he apologized for telling me to gorge on the wrong fiber. He said, "We didn't know." Well, if one has retired smart you dwell on the positive, not past mistakes. There are days I get messed up, of course. But invariably those are the days I messed up my tummy fiber routine. I swear by the product.

Not What I Was Hoping For

I can't say whether these made any difference for my bowel issues, which are more related to shortened bowels from past Crohn's resections than they are to IBD. Having to take the pills on an empty stomach was a problem as was the mild indigestion that came with them and the peppermint flavored belches that stuck with me for a good hour at least. On the plus side, there were no other bad side effects. But I didn't really notice any good effects either. Several days in I experienced my annual severe abdominal pain episode and decided to stop taking these pills just in case they played a role in triggering it. I was really enthused about these after reading all the great reviews. It's back to the drawing board in my case.

You are more than welcome to return both bottles for a refund.

When the bowels are shortened it is hard to know if the enteric coated capsules will work as they should. The other thing that can cause some people to have to difficulty using the peppermint oil capsules is a sensitivity to the natural compounds in peppermint such as salicylates. The peppermint oil is very concentrated and contains a higher amount of these natural compounds than you would consume in a cup of tea. People who have a sensitivity seem to experience burning in the intestines when they take the peppermint caps. It may come as a surprise because until the peppermint capsules, they've probably never noticed a sensitivity like this because they've honestly never consumed the compounds in this amount before.

You may want to try our Peppermint Tummy Tea for abdominal pain relief. It is medicinal strength, but the peppermint is not as concentrated as the Peppermint Oil Capsules.

It's working!
I tried an acacia fiber from the local health store first to see if it would work for my IBS. It did so I decided to order from Heather because it was less expensive bought in bulk even with shipping cost factored in. Thank you for your feedback. I am so sorry you are not finding relief from the products yet.

How much of the Tummy Fiber did you start with and how much did you end up taking before you stopped? Typically people start with ½ teaspoon twice daily, and then add an extra ½ tsp to one of those doses every 4-5 days. Keep gradually increasing until diarrhea resolves. That may end up taking 1-3 tablespoons per day, but get there gradually. It's okay if this takes a few weeks or even months - a slow and steady increase is much more likely to work than trying to take too much, too quickly. If you increase too quickly you may experience extra gas and bloating. The fiber is not a drug or a laxative, so it won't work overnight but you will see results as you are reaching your resolving daily dose.

The pep caps are best for preventing IBS pain, spasms, and cramps. These should be really helpful for the stomachache issues. They have to be taken on an empty stomach, as they need to reach your intestines before they dissolve. I find them most helpful before meals. Those can just be taken as needed.

Our fennel tea is best for gas and bloating; peppermint tea is more for pain, cramping and urgency. With the Tummy Teas at first it is best to almost "overwhelm" your system with the tea to really kick out the bloating and gas, pain and cramping. Drink the tea till you're sick of it! After that you can drink the tea as needed.

Before finding Heather's website, "hopeless" would be an accurate way to describe my life with IBS. Feeling trapped in a body that could give me such unbearable pain and a mind that seemed to betray me. The safest place for me was in my own home, near my own bathroom. There was no need then to fear and of course, I then felt at my best. But as soon as I had to leave for either work or shopping or anything else, my stomach would clench and send me running. Hi Matty - I am so sorry to hear this. Fennel is really best for IBS bloating and gas, but it is also an anti-spasmodic so it should help at least a bit with IBS pain and spasms. It should certainly not cause pain or any other symptoms. You are welcome to return the tea for a full refund.

I think this might be the answer to my problems!
This product is tasteless and does not turn into a gel. It is easy to drink. I started by using one quarter teaspoon before each meal. I am now at one teaspoon which seems to be the magic measurement for me. I have tried pills and powders and, so far, this one seems to consistently help me. I can now go back to eating my regular diet while being careful of any of my trigger foods. I am thankful.

Good, But Not Great
Tea made with the fennel teabags is much weaker than I thought it would be. I find myself using two teabags each time, which means I'm going through the tea very quickly. On an unexpected note, my urine smells like fennel all the time now, and I was quite alarmed before I realized what was causing it. I can't comment on the peppermint caps, because I haven't been using them long enough to see an effect. The non-recipe parts of the book were the most useful parts for me; as a vegetarian with a gluten sensitivity, most of the suggested recipes would wreak havoc on my system. I did really appreciate the science and the eating tips at the beginning of the book.

Hi Frank,

I'm so sorry you're having difficulty getting the Tummy Fiber to dissolve. The Tummy Fiber is certified organic, all natural gum of the acacia tree - also known as gum arabic. We have actually sourced the exact same organic Acacia Senegal grade from the same supplier from the time our company was founded. It is collected much like maple syrup, though the gum is more a solid than a liquid. They are amber colored, crystal-like pieces; these pieces are what the acacia gum looks like when it is collected from the outside of the tree. The gum is then dissolved in water, filtered, and the liquid is sprayed onto very large heated surfaces to sterilize the fiber and so the water can evaporate. What's left after the water evaporates is the fine, white powder that is acacia fiber.

There are no chemicals used in processing the acacia, and every step from the orchards to the processing to our packaging facility is certified organic. Because this is a natural gum with nothing added, and not a synthetic product that is highly processed, the grain size of the finished powder can vary from lot to lot, and even within a single lot. Even though we have specs in place for the grain size to be consistent and the optimum granularity for dissolving easily in liquids, during the packaging process the conveying and vibrating activities can sometimes separate out larger grains of the gum. This can result in a handful of finished packages of Tummy Fiber that have larger or more irregular grain sizes, which can then take longer to dissolve in liquids.

I'm including a list of tips we've come up with over the years to help fully dissolve the acacia in liquids or moist foods.

TIPS TO DISSOLVE TUMMY FIBER

1) It works best if the liquid temperature is cool or lukewarm, not very cold or boiling hot

2) Add Tummy Fiber to an empty cup, mix it with add just enough liquid to dissolve it, then add the remaining liquid

3) Stir with a fork instead of a spoon

4) After stirring initially, let it sit for about 60 seconds, then stir again and any remaining lumps should dissolve

5) Sprinkle on moist foods while stirring it in instead of adding a big spoonful all at once

6) A customer recently wrote us to say that he uses a Cuisinart Quick-Prep hand held blender to mix up his Tummy Fiber in just a few seconds.

If you are still unable to use the Tummy Fiber and are at all unhappy, please let us know and we will replace or refund the product.

Seems like an answer to me!

Hi there,
I'm sorry that you've been having trouble finding the right dose of the acacia fiber. It can take a while to work up to the right dose for you, and it is different for each person.

Taking too much acacia too fast can cause increased gas and bloating. Acacia is one of the lowest gas-forming fibers out there and going slow makes the gas issue totally avoidable. Please be patient because this really does work.

We recommend starting with ½ teaspoon twice a day (daily dose of 1 teaspoon). You can split the daily dose up as many time as you like throughout the day, just divide it by 2 or 3 depending on the frequency you prefer. Try to increase the dose every 4th day or so by a teaspoon (add this to the daily dose). If you get increased gas and bloating by jumping the dose up by a teaspoon, try cutting this in half. Some people with IBS are so sensitive they have to go up at ¼ teaspoons every 4th day. Keep stepping up the dose every 4th day or so until you find a dose that resolves your constipation and/or diarrhea. Constipation is usually resolved with a daily dose of 4-5 tablespoons/day and diarrhea/loose stools usually resolves at a lower dose of 1-3 tablespoons/day. You shouldn't take more than 5 tbsp/day. The maintenance dose is different for each person depending on their specific symptoms. Dietary changes are often necessary to make lasting changes. In the beginning until you stabilize, it works best to take the acacia before each meal to minimize the effect of trigger foods in the meal and to calm the intestines before the food arrives.

If you do decide that the Acacia Tummy Fiber isn't working for you, you can return it to us for a refund even if it's been opened.

I'm sorry to hear that the peppermint oil capsules arent' working well for your son.

The maximum dose on the capsules is 3 in a day, so if he can make it work in his schedule to do the 3rd one,that might help. They do need to be taken on an empty stomach, so about 2 hours after eating, or 15 minutes to an hour before eating.

The other thing I would recommend would be peppermint or fennel tea. Peppermint will help with pain and urgency, the fennel with bloating and gas. Or, any form of peppermint, like Altoids mints can help if tea isn't an option.

If you and your son decide that the peppermint capsules just aren't working, you can return them even if they've been opened for a refund.

It is very frustrating for us as well because it seems to be totally random as to whether Customs will hold an order and for how long. Very disappointed

I have been taking Citrucel for abt 14yrs. But still having the Big D for abt 15 years . So I decided to try this Product hoping it would help. Even tho I was taking 4 Citracel a day. I started out with 1/2 tsp. after trying for a week this product made be very uncomfortable, cramps ,bloated & gas .... So gave up on this and when back to the old citrucel again. Really wish it would have work for me . But no luck. But am glad it works for some people.... Wish there was a miracle pill for this thing they call IBS!! Maybe someday.

Hi Joyce - I'm so sorry you're not feeling better. You may be someone who is extra sensitive to any change in your fiber. Your Citrucel was at a very low dose (4 tablets = 2 grams), so you may need to drop below that dose if you change to the Tummy Fiber.

Normally, people can start on ½ teaspoon twice daily (that would be 2 grams), but for people who are just extra sensitive, they may have to start at ¼ teaspoon twice daily. That should not cause any bloating or gas, it should just get your gut used to a change. You can then add an extra ¼ tsp to one of your daily doses every 4-5 days or so, and keep gradually increasing at that rate.

Diarrhea does tend to resolve at a lower end of the dose range, but I don't think 2 grams will be enough. On average, diarrhea takes 5-15 grams per day, more typically 10-12 grams per day.

If you're willing to start over at a lower dose, I would hope you see big improvements with no side effects. If you prefer to just return the Tummy Fiber for a full refund you are certainly welcome to, and I understand.

The fennel tea specifically targets bloating and gas associated with IBS, but won't do much for other IBS symptoms.
I'm not sure which specific "IBS problems" you're experiencing, but I would definitely recommend a good soluble fiber supplement like our Acacia Senegal Tummy Fiber. This will help with ALL symptoms of IBS. Including diarrhea and constipation.
You could also try peppermint tea for pain or urgency, or the peppermint oil capsules for preventing pain, cramping, bloating, gas, and urgency.

When I order the powder, it arrives always in a week or 9 days. This time I waited three weeks. I think this is not your fault, but maybe the delay was caused by the import office. Great Results
I have been suffering from IBS for about 20 years , I'm now 46 . I have tried several different products over the years to calm my stomach down without good results.Prior to finding these Peppermint caps ,I can say that these peppermint caps do the job great , I don't suffer from heart burn , but i do get the occasional Peppermint taste in my mouth 15-20 minutes after taking these , but its very tolerable for me , kinda like having a mint in your mouth for a few minutes .Thanks for a great Product that really works ..

Not sure if it helps or not.

I suffer with IBS-C and have horrible gas/bloating. Sometimes I feel like the peppermint tabs help and other times I'm still miserable and don't feel like they help at all.

Hi Judy - I'm so sorry you're having mixed results. Bloating seems to be the most difficult IBS symptom to manage. It can help to take 3 pep caps a day, every single day, for at least a week. If you have the Fennel Tummy Tea as well, which is specifically for bloating and gas, drink as many cups of tea per day for the first several days as possible. If you can 'overwhelm' your gut for the first few days that can help get on top of the bloating and gas.

I looked on the bottom of the can. The expiration date was not on it. Usually it is on it. This is a concern to me.

Hi Rose - our products are always labeled with a pack date, lot code, and best by date. Sometimes that information is on the bottom of the cans, and sometimes it is lasered onto the sides of cans. If it is on the side, it is going to be in white and printed directly on the can. It will not be a separate sticker, so it will be less obvious. Best, Heather

The Jury is still out!

I have been taking the Tummy Fiber since before Christmas. My IBS changed to about every hour - not hard not soft and pretty small. As I encreased so did the gas. Yesterday I went back to Citrecil and even though I am still going frequently I don't have as much gas. I gradually encreased my Tummy Fiber by a half tsp every week and the more I took the more gas I had so I backed off which did no good. I am still on the program along with the CD's Help!!

I am sorry to hear that you aren't having good luck with the Acacia Senegal Tummy Fiber. It sounds like you did increase gradually, which is great. Some people are a little more sensitive to it, so you might consider starting low again and increasing just by 1/4 tsp or even 1/8 tsp until you see a resolving dose. If you do start to see increased gas and bloating, don't add any more fiber.

You could also try some good strong Fennel Tea. Fennel does wonders for gas and bloating, and provides some instant relief.

If you do decide not to take the Acacia fiber, you can return it to us for a refund. Include in the box your name, address, phone number, and your invoice number if you have it, and we'll process the return for you.

Complex feedback on Fennel Tea Order

Speed of delivery even faster than needed. The fennel tea also delivers gut relief to me quickly, and this speed I welcome. Nothing else I do for relief acts as quickly. I have long felt that the postage fees are much too large a cost. They often represent a 1/3 increase in costs for purchases. With this order I took more initiative and talked to customer service. I found out that postage depends on the number of items ordered. However, after 3 items there are no increases in postage charges. This information needs to be given to your customers so that they can plan their puchases accordingly.

We have actually added text about that to our website check out pages in bold red, so hopefully more people will see it. You are right, postage fees have increased extraordinarily in the past few years, and it is a source of tremendous frustration for us.

One of the ways we've tried to work around this is to have postage max out at three items, so after that there is no additional postage cost. But you let us know that we needed to do a better job at letting our customers know about this. So hopefully thanks to you this information is now more visible!
