Most of the recipes I cannot use

I have to be very careful of the sugar in my diet and the carbs. So eating most of these recipes is out of the question. However I would like to say that the Acacia Tummy Fiber I bought at my local health store has had remarkable results with my gut and its problems.

tea did not work at all

I purchased for my mom, who has severe stomach pains from ibs, we have tried other peppermint products and also your fennel tea, for her nothing works. that not to say your product doesnt work, it just doesnt for her

I am so sorry your mom is not satisfied with the product.

Sometimes the best way for the teas to be effective for the pain and cramping is to "overwhelm" your gut with it for the first few days. Drink the teas till you are just sick of them for a good 2-3 days. This can help stop the pain and cramping so you can get on top of it, and then you can drop down to drinking the tea as needed.

If you do decide that they are just not working for your mom, you can certainly return the products for a refund.

Purchased for my mom who has diarrhea & constipation from IBS. Been taking for 3 weeks to experience which dosage may help to make her regular. In 3 weeks nothing has changed with her diarrhea or constipation

Hello Darla,

I am so sorry your mom is not satisfied with the product.

The cardinal rule with Acacia is to start at a low dose (for Acacia, just 1/2 a level measuring teaspoon, twice daily), and increase gradually. It can take several weeks to slowly work your way up to your daily resolving dose.

Acacia is not a laxative, and it will not give "overnight relief", so taking a low dose for a few days or even a few weeks will not alleviate your symptoms. What it will do is begin to acclimate your gut to a higher daily dose of fiber, and this is the goal. It may be that your mom still needs to keep increasing in order to see the results she is looking for.

Generally those with the diarrhea side of IBS will resolve between 1 and 3 Tablespoons a day. Those with constipation need more fiber for relief and may need 3-5 Tablespoons a day. My guess is since your mom alternates between the two, she may need to reach a daily dose between 2 and 4 Tablespoons a day.

If she is still not satisfied, she is welcome to send back the Tummy Fiber for a refund.

I am so sorry you do not like that the Tummy Fiber is tasteless. It is meant to be that way so you can add it to plain water, or flavored liquids, and not even know it is there.

You may want to try mixing it into moist foods such as oatmeal, soups, cereals, adding it to smoothies or sprinkling it onto sandwiches or other foods.

If you would like to continue taking it with flavored water, make sure the flavored water does not have any artificial sweeteners or carbonation. Sometimes the flavored waters do have those and can actually trigger IBS symptoms.

I also see that you were not completely satisfied with our Customer Service or Speed of Delivery. I am so sorry about that! Both are very important to us. We aim to get all orders out the next business day after they are placed and use Priority Mail for the fastest and least expensive shipping methods we know.

If you have any suggestions on how we can improve our Customer Service and Speed of Delivery on orders we would gladly accept them.

Just recently started using Heather's products and reading her books to help control this ibs-d. So far I am already seeing improvement with less gas and diarrhea. These peppermint, ginger, and fennel pills are helping a lot. They help, though I seem to need to take 2 pills one half to one hour before meals, not one pill, but that is okay. Peppermint Tea Bags really work.
I tried the sample tea bag and was so amazed at how much better my tummy felt that I ordered a can of tea bags. I have at least two cups and day and feel really great. Eating for IBS has an excellent introduction (first 36 pages) which gives commonsense guidelines for eating - and the recipes are great also. Peppermint Capsules Excellent for Irritable Bowel Symptoms

IBS Attack
My last IBS attack happened right after I received my package, but hadn't really tried it. I switched from regular tea to the Peppermint and then also the Fennel Teas. Best thing I have found
These are the greatest - I take one with small sip of water while still in bed (mornings) then listen to CD's for IBS - improvement has been slow - but now so much better, IBS is a cruel health issue, Dr's just don't have all information on problem, my nurse practioner helped me also by telling me to try fiber capsules, helped immediately, I have to take a least 12 a day, but to get relief I would try anything to get rid of stabbing pain in mornings in lower tummy.

More than just IBS
Like many people who have IBS, I have gone through the gauntlet of medical tests, months of abdominal pain, headaches and other issues linked to IBS. Out of the multitude of physicians I consulted, I am thankful for two physicians. Dr. TJB and Dr. TL (initials only-both licensed gastro's). No difference.
I really do not see any noticeable difference and I'm almost to the bottom of the canister. Adding it to food wasn't appealing and mixing it with water wasn't much better. It never fully dissolves no matter how long it sits or I stir it. I do not have the typical constipation or diarrhea, but gas, bloating, pain and food intolerance. For these symptoms it did not help at all. I ordered the pouch at the same time and really don't want to use it. I'm sorry I ordered both at the same time.

Hi June - thank you so much for your feedback! Sometimes for gas and bloating it really helps to "overwhelm" your gut with the Fennel Tummy Tea at first. Because it aids in gas expulsion, for the first few days it can seem as if you have more gas because your body is simply eliminating more of it. This will settle down quickly.

I tell people to try and drink the fennel tea all day long, as much as you can, until you are just sick of it. Do this just for the first 2-3 days or so, and then you can drop back to a reasonable amount and keep the gas and bloating under control. Hope this helps a bit!

I have IBS amongst many other ills, and I am gassy. I cannot hold it in. Once in PE class I was passing gas with every sit up. Walking to the bathroom at work I would pass noisy, foul smelling gas all the way there. Trying to hold it in made the pain worse and hastened the BM. Hi Michelle - thank you so much for your kind comments! You can use the Tummy Fiber and the peppermint oil caps together. The pep caps are best for preventing pain and spasms, the fiber is best for resolving diarrhea and/or constipation.

You do want to take the caps on an empty stomach, so not right with the fiber. The fiber you can just add right into moist foods at meal times, or have in liquids. You do have to start with a low dose of Tummy Fiber and increase gradually, and you need to use it daily (really, it should be taken twice daily for best results, as you want to keep your gut filled with soluble fiber).

The pep caps are much more a take-as-needed treatment. You can take them every day, or just on days when things aren't going well. They are different from the fiber in that regard, as the fiber really needs continuous use, and you have to gradually get your fiber dose up to the level that works for you.

The info in the books is compatible with the caps and the fiber, so definitely add that in without worry!

I would like to say...I am so happy. The peppermint oil pills seem to be working and since I have started taking them I have had no spasms. My gut feels more relaxed. I normally use loose tea every morning but when I travel it's nice to have the bags. I have made my own tea bags, but they seem to fall apart with use. Also, you can carry these with you and use discreetly at a restaurant, just order hot water for tea. The peppermint tea is truly the best I have found anywhere.

Acacia has changed my life.
After suffering for years from constipation, stomach aches and laxatives, Acacia has given me back my freedom from sick stomach days of lying on the couch. If used DAILY, it will positively work. Hi Barbara - caffeine is a GI stimulant, so a potential IBS trigger, so be careful. Having said that people do have different tolerance levels for it. The safest way to get caffeine is probably green or black tea. If you're prone to heartburn use green tea, which is lower in acid. Definitely avoid coffee, even decaf, as it's a huge GI trigger. These teas have made such a huge difference. I love the peppermint! Fennel is definitely an acquired taste...but, works with a little bit of raw sugar. Drink at least 3 cups a day. Hi Michel - you are right, the Tummy Fiber dissolves best in room temperature water, not liquids that are boiling hot or ice cold. But, you can liquefy the fiber in just enough water to get it dissolved, and once it's liquefied you can add it to boiling or iced liquids and it will be fine.

The other fibers on the market that dissolve instantly across all temperatures are very highly processed, and are typically refined by-products of other food manufacturing processes (like dextrin from wheat or corn). They are not whole foods fibers like the acacia. The acacia senegal is literally the entire gum acacia produced by the tree (a little like syrup from maple trees) and it is not highly refined or extracted into multiple elements. This makes it a much higher quality, and we think a much better, soluble fiber supplement choice.

You can also just sprinkle the fiber on any moist food and not bother with adding it to liquids if you wish.

It sounds like you need to increase the amount of Tummy Fiber you are taking daily. Typically those with IBS-D need to take 1-3 Tablespoons a day to resolve diarrhea.

Each Tummy Fiber Travel Packet contains about 1 teaspoon of Tummy Fiber. These are great for convenience and to try the Tummy Fiber, but I would recommend ordering the Tummy Fiber Canister so you have enough fiber to notice more results.

Remember to gradually increase your total daily dose of Tummy Fiber by 1/2 teaspoon every 4-5 days until you find relief. Once you feel resolved you can stick with that daily dose from there on out.

Hi Kathryn - I'm so sorry to hear this. People tend to either love or hate the black licorice taste of fennel. It really does work well for gas and bloating though so many people just get creative about how to take it. You can brew it with another herbal tea such as peppermint or chamomile to disguise the flavor (peppermint in particular completely kills the fennel taste).

Using honey as a sweetener really makes it taste better as well. And some folks simply brew it very strong, let it cool, and drink it quickly as they would a medicine.

Hi Karen - I am so sorry you experienced GERD after taking the Tummy Tamers.

When we developed the Tummy Tamers, we formulated them specifically for the special needs of people with IBS.

Our first concern is that people with IBS are statistically more prone to heartburn, and peppermint is contraindicated for people with heartburn, GERD, and reflux. We have tried very hard to work around this problem, however.

The Tummy Tamers capsules are enteric coated, which allows them to pass through the stomach without dissolving until they reach the small intestines. This enteric coating is resistant to stomach acid.

In fact, we use fifty percent more than the industry standard amount of enteric coating on our Tummy Tamers, to allow as many people as possible to use them for IBS without aggravating any upper GI issues.

Peppermint is contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we use 50% more enteric coating than the industry standard because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening.

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

I have suffered with GI problems for years and last year I finally decided to get tests done to see if anything major was wrong. Luckily nothing was found and I was diagnosed with IBS. It took me a full year after being diagnosed to do some research. I don't know if I was in denial or what but I was sick of being home all the time with fear of not having a bathroom close by. I purchased some Peppermint Oil pills and was amazed how they worked. I used them for a few weeks. I ended up getting this kit so I could try the other products too. I have a problem drinking the fennel tea, it's not something that tastes good to me but I really want to like it. The peppermint tea works almost instantly if I need it, thankfully it's rare I even need it. I just took a vacation and was so nervous about my stomach. I had 1 episode during the week which I admit, it wasn't a healthy eating week. I was able to have a couple adult beverages which is a miracle seeing as I gave up drinking alcohol a couple years ago. Your customer service people are the best! I used the fennel tea and the peppermint tea. I have not tried the acacia fiber at all. The peppermint oil made my urine sting and irritated my esophagus, so I didn't use it. I read the book Stop IBS, but the cookbook isn't useful because I don't cook much. My alternative medical doctor thinks that stress had a big impact on my digestion. The whole episode eased off in a few weeks. Thanks for your help.

The healing capacity of ths tea is immediate, and for me certain.
This product is wonderful. When I develop acid reflux after I eat, I prepare the tea as quickly as possible. Fantastic product
A few months past I ordered the Tummy Fiber Acacia Senegal can. I must say that I did have my doubts. I have IBS-C and along with the constipation, gas and bloating. I take 1 and a half teaspoons of the fiber twice a day. Not immediate results but gradually the bloating subsided. Still some gas but I am much more regular. I have tried many fiber products without any results and of course Miralax. This is the only product that I need now. My only criticism is that sometimes the fiber will clump up and not dissolve. Perhaps it is the humid summer that we are experiencing. No matter this product has helped me tremendously.

Hi Loretta - Thank you so much for your feedback. The fennel tea should not worsen GERD. If anything, it may help it a bit, though it is really best for bloating and gas.

I'd try either the fennel tea or the homeopathic tabs one at a time, so you will know which one is affecting you.

To try the tea again, drink as much as possible the first few days to really get on top of bloating and gas, Then you can drop down to a few cups a day and keep symptoms at bay.

If bloating/gas are not your main concerns let me know, as there may be other options that are a better fit for you than the fennel.

I'm sorry to hear that the fennel tea isn't working well for your symptoms. It does help at first to almost "overwhelm" your gut with the tea to really kick out the bloating and gas. Drink the tea constantly, all day long, the first several days until till you're just sick of it - that really does help get on top of the gas and bloating.

You can also try the peppermint oil capsules to help prevent the bloating and gas. Take these before a meal (ALWAYS on an empty stomach) as a preventative measure.

Heather's Tummy Fiber has made my life much better. I either have constipation or on occasion, diarrhea, which lowers my energy so much that I can't do anything that I need to do for a day or two. Now, when my gut feels like I might have diarrhea, I take 1/2 tsp. of Heather's Tummy Fiber, relax and in only a few minutes the feeling goes away, and my gut no longer feels like it is going to spasm. I've learned what works for me with the tummy fiber, I can take a teaspoon or so of it at night and in the morning, no more constipation. This is a huge improvement in my quality of life.

Hi Veona - I'm so sorry to hear this. It should very easy to get enough protein and still eat safely for IBS.

You have many different options: skinless white meat chicken or turkey breasts; any kind of seafood at all; egg whites or Egg Beaters; veggie substitutes for meats like veggie hot dogs or Garden Burgers; well cooked and chopped/pureed beans or lentils (add slowly and gradually to your diet); any kind of soy product; finely ground nuts added to a soluble fiber foundation.

If you need recipes ideas for how to incorporate these foods, or any more help at all, please just let us know.

I must be allergic to this product.

Hi there,

I am sorry that the peppermint oil capsules did not work as quickly as you had expected.

The capsules work best when taken on an empty stomach with as little water as possible to swallow it about an hour before eating, or 2 hours after eating. This way, the capsules can get all the way through the stomach before the coating dissolves, and the oil can coat the lining of your system. This should prevent abdominal cramping, spasms, bloating, and gas.

If you find that the peppermint capsules aren't working for you, you can return them for a refund. You might consider trying the Peppermint or Fennel teas as more immediate relief of symptoms.

Heartburn from Peppermint Oil Caps

This is the first product that I've tried from Heather's IBS. Unfortunately, it kicked off the worst heartburn I've had in years!! It's really thrown me into a state, and I'm still trying to resolve it. WARNING to people who have hiatal hernias: you can't take peppermint oil because it relaxes the sphincter in the diaphragm causing GERD/gastroesophageal reflux --heartburn. A WARNING should be put on this product for people with GERD or hiatal hernias. It does relax the smooth muscles in the colon and take away the pain of IBS, but one isn't looking to exchange one problem for another.

Hello Pamela,

I am so sorry you experienced bad heartburn after taking the Tummy Tamers.

When we developed the Tummy Tamers, we formulated them specifically for the special needs of people with IBS.

Our first concern is that people with IBS are statistically more prone to heartburn, and peppermint is contraindicated for people with heartburn, GERD, and reflux. We have tried very hard to work around this problem, however.

The Tummy Tamers capsules are enteric coated, which allows them to pass through the stomach without dissolving until they reach the small intestines. This enteric coating is resistant to stomach acid.

In fact, we use fifty percent more than the industry standard amount of enteric coating on our Tummy Tamers, to allow as many people as possible to use them for IBS without aggravating any upper GI issues.

Peppermint is contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we use 50% more enteric coating than the industry standard because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening.

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

On a related note, not being able to tolerate the enteric coated peppermint oil capsules because they are dissolving in the stomach and causing heartburn or peppermint burping might indicate low stomach acid. In naturopathic medicine, heartburn is often thought to be caused by low stomach acid which causes the undigested food to sit in the stomach too long and create pressure. It can also contribute to inadequately digested protein in the stomach. This can disrupt the digestive process downstream as well. If you followed the tips I listed above and still experienced heartburn, you might want to follow up with a provider to test your stomach acid levels. A naturopath or nutritionist would probably be the best type of provider to address this for you.

The other thing that can cause some people to have to difficulty using the peppermint oil capsules is a sensitivity to the natural compounds in peppermint such as salicylates. The peppermint oil is very concentrated and contains a higher amount of these natural compounds than you would consume in a cup of tea. People who have a sensitivity seem to experience burning in the intestines when they take the peppermint caps. It may come as a surprise because until the peppermint capsules, they've probably never noticed a sensitivity like this because they've honestly never consumed the compounds in this amount before.

Of course if you are unable to take the peppermint oil capsules, please feel free to return them even if you have used part of the bottle. I am so pleased with these products; can't begin to tell you.
After suffering 6mo with acute colitis and IBS I came across Heather's products at our local Bartell drug store and within 4 days i was pain free, very little bloating, gas and no diarrhea. I will follow her diet recommendations and will never be without her products on hand. The only negative comment I have is the recipes call for so many different ingredients and some very expensive but I do understand eating this new way is going to cost more. this is the 2nd purchase here and it included everything i really needed. the first book and peppermint cas were not enough for me to understand everything. the cheat sheet said rice so I bought brown rice-huh- but only the book said white rice, so $35 of brown rice down the drain. The peppermint and fennel tea is delicious and relaxing. th acaci for soluable fiber and peppermint caps help a lot. Beware, tho that until you cut out ALL triggers you will get even worse. I tried to keep some sweets that included butter, which did not work. Sugar cookies with green sprinkles was a very bad idea. I have diarrhea with fecal incontinence-which no one knows why I have fecal incontinence except it began after abdominal cancer surgery 7 years ago. (I suspect it was something to do with removing all the omentum and putting my intestines back in a bit wrong). Read the book. do not think the cheat sheet goes you all you need to know. and elinimate everything she says asap. it only prolongs the physical and mental anguish if you do not. I wish I had found this before.

I've also been using the Fod-maps diet, taking 10 mgs. of Elavil, and "Live Go" a pre and probiotic...it all seems to be working well together. It took about 3 weeks but I feel SO much better and am not exhausted all of the time from the energy drain of poor digestion. Thanks!!!

I've been using Heathers tummy fiber daily for a few years now. Just a 1/2 teaspoon in my coffee. When I hadn't restocked I thought , not a big deal I'm good! .Well let me say that a few days later I sure noticed the difference in my digestive system. I put my order in immediately.
