Just wanted to thank you for your tummy tea (fennel), peppermint capsules and the fiber. My mom went into the hospital in January for what I think was IBS but the doctors said differently. They said she had a bacteria infection and was sent home. A month later we took her to St. Joseph's Hospital in Maryland and her bowel was completely twisted, she looked like she was 9 months pregnant ( she is 83 years old). They did a CAT Scan and saw how the bowel was twisted. The gastro doctor blew air in her and opened the bowel and so far she as been doing well. My son and I take care of her, she lives with us. My son Paul Digiacinto purchased your products and your IBS receipe book. We have been giving her protein, potassium and have been following your good fiber for her bowel. I puree all of her food for the time being. I have purchased all soy products. The doctors did not diagnosis her with IBS but all of her symptoms were all related to IBS. We told the doctors what we were doing and they said to go for it. She has been going to the bathroom almost everyday. She just loves the fennel tea. Your products are amazing and juts wanted to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your heal and especially you wonderful web site.

Fennel Tea puts me to sleep!

This product needs a warning! One cup made me so sleepy and groggy and muddled I would not have been safe to drive! Could not even play solitaire! It may be good for the tummy, but tough on the brain!

Hello Anthony,

I am so sorry you experienced this with the Tummy Tamers. Peppermint is contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we doubled the enteric coating on our peppermint caps because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening:

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

Of course if you are unable to take the peppermint oil capsules, please feel free to return them even if you have used part of the bottle.

Although it works it caused problems

The peppermint capsules keep repeating and the menthol burns my throat. I can't tolerate the fennel at all. The taste of the peppermint tea was off. There was a weed like flavor to them. Peppermint works miracles for IBS but the grocery store peppermint tea bags work just as well. Stops symptoms in about 5 minutes.

Our Peppermint Tea is medicinal strength and is much stronger than most tea brands you will find at the store. The taste of the tea will be slightly different than other teas because the volatile oil content is much higher.

Are you talking about an allergy to acacia trees? There shouldn't be a connection between an allergy to acacia pollen or leaves and the acacia fiber. We do have folks allergic to acacia trees who do fine with the acacia fiber. The fiber is actually only produced by two specific species of acacia trees, which only grow in Africa. The fiber comes from a gum that these trees produce (sort of like maple syrup) when the temperature hits a certain height.

Acacia fiber is also known as gum arabic. A gum allergy is quite rare. If you are allergic to gum arabic, or to gums in general (guar gum, locust bean gum, etc.) then you'd want to avoid acacia fiber.

Need to experiment more

Fiber either caused or coincided with terrible bout of constipation, so I quit using it. Tea seemed to cause bloating.

Hello Andrea,

I am so sorry you experienced constipation. The Tummy Fiber will not actually cause constipation, but will help to resolve bowel motility issues. I would recommend trying the Tummy Fiber Acacia Senegal one more time.

Please make sure you start with a low dose and gradually increase to a higher resolving does. Taking too much acacia too fast can cause increased gas and bloating. Acacia is one of the lowest gas-forming fibers out there and going slow makes the gas issue totally avoidable. Please be patient because this really does work.

We recommend starting with ½ teaspoon twice a day (daily dose of 1 teaspoon). You can split the daily dose up as many time as you like throughout the day, just divide it by 2 or 3 depending on the frequency you prefer. Try to increase the dose every 4th day or so by a teaspoon (add this to the daily dose). If you get increased gas and bloating by jumping the dose up by a teaspoon, try cutting this in half. Some people with IBS are so sensitive they have to go up at ¼ teaspoons every 4th day. Keep stepping up the dose every 4th day or so until you find a dose that resolves your constipation and/or diarrhea. Constipation is usually resolved with a daily dose of 4-5 tablespoons/day and diarrhea/loose stools usually resolves at a lower dose of 1-3 tablespoons/day. You shouldn't take more than 5 tbsp/day. The maintenance dose is different for each person depending on their specific symptoms. Dietary changes are often necessary to make lasting changes. In the beginning until you stabilize, it works best to take the acacia before each meal to minimize the effect of trigger foods in the meal and to calm the intestines before the food arrives.

Effectiveness of the Peppermint Pills
I cannot express how very relied I am to have FINALLY found something that works to control my IBS. I was diagnosed as having IBS. I had been put on a prescription for it, but I didn't like taking the drug. I tried some over the counter pills that were very expensive. Absolutely nothing has helped me like the Peppermint pills do. I can now leave the house without being worried about having an episode of uncontrollable diarrea while I am out. I finally feel like I have control of over my body instead of it having control over me. My daughter has the same issue so I gave her a bottle of the Peppermint pills to try as well. We both also suffer from acid reflux, but I have been able to avoid this by following the instructions as listed on the bottle. I told my daughter to be sure and follow the instructions as well. Uneven results so far.

At first I thought that I had the answer to chronic constipation. But the effects have faded quite a bit. Very hard stools and none some days. I will keep working with the amount I use. My feeling is that eventually it will work the way I had hoped for. It is not possible for me to follow the diet so that has some effect. I live in a community and what is prepared is what there is. I am 75 years old and in poor health. I cannot cook for myself.

Hi Robert - I'm so sorry your results with the Tummy Fiber have faded a bit. That usually means you simply need to gradually increase your dose a bit higher. Sometimes people stabilize at a certain dose, and then something comes along that upsets their gut, and they need to raise their Tummy Fiber dose to get back on track. That's okay, the fiber is flexible that way, so you can adjust your dose depending on how you're doing. Just make sure you increase your dose gradually, maybe by an extra teaspoon every 4 days or so.

Basically, this acacia powder has been an answer to my prayers
Happily I will review your service and products: Your response to my order was courteous, prompt and very professional. Awesome! The travel packets are a much welcome product!! I used them for the first time the other night at a restraunt. I use 2 1/2 tsp of acacia 3x a day and the only thing I am wondering is if you could put a tablespoon of acacia in each pouch, that way, I could use a teaspoon and measure what I need...and if the pouch could be resealable...but that is a lot of work for you and would obviously need to increase the cost. You could have another option of putting 3 tbsp in a resealable pouch for travel for people to use on the go, measure out what they need and put back in their purse, etc...I basically always did that when I traveled, just used a plastic resealable bag and measured the acacia into that. Anyway, love this product and will definitely use it. The acacia pouch, the large one, is great, I still use the original canister I got from you from my first order. Basically, this acacia powder has been an answer to my prayers, I was ready to not try it again, but realized I hadn't been using it correctly and needed to increase my dosages. It has worked wonders for the diarrhea! For the constipation, it has taken longer to work, but now I am beginning to feel I can have my life back. I am also learning a lot about IBS, here, all these years I thought I knew so much, and now I understand so much better from your great newsletters, etc. Most of all, though, I need to tell you how much I appreciate your kindness and thoughtful help. You are a tremendous source of support for me, your patient responses to my email questions and care of people with this distressing disorder are very noteworthy. Hi Janet - I'm so sorry you're having difficulty getting the Tummy Fiber to dissolve. I'm including a list of tips we've come up with over the years to help fully dissolve the acacia in liquids or moist foods.

TIPS TO DISSOLVE TUMMY FIBER

1) It works best if the liquid temperature is cool or lukewarm, not very cold or boiling hot

2) Add Tummy Fiber to an empty cup, mix it with add just enough liquid to dissolve it, then add the remaining liquid

3) Stir with a fork instead of a spoon

4) After stirring initially, let it sit for about 60 seconds, then stir again and any remaining lumps should dissolve

5) Sprinkle on moist foods while stirring it in instead of adding a big spoonful all at once

I've taken this for several years, as I have IBS. I've gotten to the point that I'm pretty well managed, and have my life back. Nice. Everyone will have to find the Heather's products that works best for them, try according to symptoms, but this is the fiber I swear by. I once was doing so well, I tried to stop taking Heather's fiber, and just take the "M" brand fiber which I can get anywhere. After 2 weeks of quitting the Heather's, I had an attack. So I will keep ordering this online until we get someone in Austin Texas to carry it. But I won't stop taking it again.

I don't have IBS but I do have a whole lot of gas and my dog has digestive problems. Since my chemotherapy, I have had problems with stools. I have been using the acacia tummy fiber for over 5 years now. I suffer from severe IBS and have since I Was very young. I have great luck with this product. Other fiber supplements such as Metamucil, citrucal. Etc. are not the same. I keep my IBS under reasonable control with acacia tummy fiber. I only wish my local health store would carry it, but I have asked and they have not shown any interest in doing so.

Acacia Senegal is a great gift!

I am very happy with the Acacia Senegal and other great products on the website. In my work now and then I'm meeting people who even have IBS and don't know what to do. I refer them to the website and hope that they also benefit. I use the Acacia Senegal, peppermint tea and pills, fennel tea, and various supplements (for example probiotics and magnesium and calcium). I think I'd just shoot myself and get it over with if I really had to the unhealthy diet suggested in the book. I know I wouldn't feel good with white rice and white bread as the main part of my meals. Thank goodness my diet doesn't have to be that drastic.

Hi Susan - Please don't feel this way - the IBS diet is not actually drastic at all, especially once you get yourself a bit stable. It's a very healthy, plant-based high soluble fiber diet that is meant to carefully incorporate as much insoluble fiber as you can tolerate. While white rice and white breads (or pasta, barley, quinoa, cornmeal, root veggies, etc.) are the safe soluble fiber foundations, you use them to keep your gut stable while you carefully add insoluble fiber foods (fruits and veggies, some whole grains, nuts, etc.) You can also have seafood, skinless white meat poultry, egg whites, and more.

The First Year IBS book has a concise dietary chapter and a small menu section, but Eating for IBS is the book that takes the IBS diet and shows how wide-ranging and delicious IBS recipes can be. It's really not difficult to cook around the IBS diet triggers and avoid them completely, and still have healthy and appealing meals and snacks. That point was actually the driving force behind Eating for IBS in the first place. I was determined to be able to eat safely and keep my IBS under control, while still being able to cook and eat fantastic foods, from all-American to ethnic options to great desserts. No one should ever feel deprived or unhealthy with an IBS diet - there are too many tips and tricks and substitutions to let you have great food that will still keep your gut calm.

This is a well researched, informative book.
I was very impressed with this book. Many important facts not found even on websites supposedly dedicated to gastrointestinal problems were included in the book. As was stated, IBS is very individual. I think the recipes are very helpful for creating a varied diet. One can pick and choose what works. But I especially liked all of the tips for dealing with IBS, such as eating a less safe food AFTER eating soluble fiber. Hi Judith - I'm so sorry the Tummy Tamers aren't helping you with gas. You can take up to three of them a day, every day, for the strongest results.

Even though the peppermint oil capsules have fennel oil in them, and the fennel is what will help gas, if gas is your primary troublesome symptom my suggestion would actually be the Fennel Tummy Tea. Peppermint is best for pain and spasms, fennel is best for gas and bloating. The Tummy Tamers have a lot more peppermint than fennel oil, so they are my first choice for preventing pain.

Straight fennel, as in the Tummy Tea, would be my first recommendation for gas and bloating. You would use it as many times a day as you like, without any restrictions on whether or not you have a full stomach. It often works best to try and overwhelm your gut with fennel tea the first several days to really get gas and bloating and under control, and then drop back to a maintenance dose of a cup or two a day, or as needed.

I use to drink lots of coffee, but now I have replaced it with the best peppermint tea ever. The tea relaxes my system, especially after I've gone to the bathroom in the morning. I drink it every evening while relaxing before going to bed. The tea works great if you have an upset tummy, or have overeaten. Easy to use and tastes quite good in a cup of tea.
I started using the fiber in Aug. and it seems to be helping. I need to increase the amount but things are better. Drinking enough fluids is the hardest part. Our cat get the runs and the vet recommended Metamucil. Yuck! Instead he gets a tiny bit of the Acacia Fiber. Helps him too.

Dear Heather, I am 17, and have had food issues, originally thought to be allergies, for at least three years or more. At first, it seemed to be certain things like carrots and cabbage, but last year, it increased to the point where it almost seemed as though everything I ate caused diareaha, constipation, and even widespread muscle and joint pain. This led to the idea that perhaps I had fybromyalgia, and I went on with that idea until I noticed that all of my food issues had one thing in common: Beta carotine, or Vitamin A. I know now that it was merely a coincidence, that the vegatables containing high amounts of insoluable fiber also contain beta carotine, but at the time i thought that it alone was the source of my troubles. Long story shorter, after going to my doctor, he directed me to an allergist, who diagnosed me with IBS. Even after I had an actual diagnosis, I still didnt know what to do. I employed the mighty power of google, but still any true answers, much less a cure, was not to be found. I was beginning to struggle with self pity until I spoke to a person I respect very much, a former sunday school teacher of mine. She told me that she had had IBS over twenty years ago, and because of careful eating, she was able to reverse her IBS completely! So I started doing what this lady had done. I stayed away from citrus, from spicy foods, and I ate a lot of bread, rice and pasta. I took Tums before and after every meal, I drank a considerable amount of water, and I switched from regular milk to soy milk. And gradually my stomach settled down. and then I snuck in a candy bar or two. and then it was orange juice, and maybe a french fry here and there. And lo and behold, it's been four months and I am having virtually no problem with my IBS! In my early days of diagnosis, I ran across your website, and IT WAS A GODSEND. I had NO Idea that there were two kinds of fiber, much less that one of them could actually hurt me! I'm sorry this is sort of long, but I am SO grateful to you because IM REVERSING MY IBS!!! I can eat virtually anything i want WITHOUT Tums! I'm able to eat more food, and I had a great big salad the other day for the first time in MONTHS. It felt fantastic to eat salad!! I feel like I have my life back! Thank you so much!!!

My IBS has been helped since I have been taking the tummy fiber. I DO WISH IT CAME IN PILL FORM AS WELL. I have to take at least 4 tablesoons a day. Is it possible to make it EVENTUALLY in pill form?
