Not really sure....

I tried taking this but keep burping it up for hours after I eat and it's kind of gross. I tried taking up to an hour before eating, a half hour before eating and it still made me belch. Also, I haven't been able to take it long enough to see if it helps with my diarrhea issues....????

Hi Beth,

Peppermint is contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by using enteric coating for the peppermint oil capsules. This allows the capsules to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we use 50% more enteric coating than the industry standard because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

The capsules are enteric coated to ensure that they pass through the stomach intact, and dissolve in the small intestines. The enteric coating is acid-resistant but water soluble.

Without enteric coating, the capsules could dissolve in the stomach. The antispasmodic effect that is meant to happen in the bowels could then occur in the upper GI tract. If this happens, the esphohageal sphincter can relax, and lead to acid reflux.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening.

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach, an hour before the meal, to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they’ll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn’t take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

Peppermint Capsules

They work but after awhile not so much

They did work amazing when I first started using them, but now I don't feel they are helping to control my bowl spasms. I do notice I have a lot of flatulance after using them and that doesn't go away which is good it's expelling gas, but I believe I'm still getting spasms and sometimes tingle from them in the butt area.

A great product.
The peppermint caps have become a must for me. When I started taking them I was unaware of how many things they would help me to calm down. So now I take them whenever I feel gas starting to form, later when I am very miserable or anytime I feel the need. They are another item I usually take with me also.. It is also critical to follow the directions when taking Tummy Tamers to further reduce the risk of heartburn. They must be taken on an empty stomach, with just enough cool water to comfortably swallow. Wait 15 minutes before eating if you are not prone to heartburn. If you are prone to heartburn, wait a full hour before eating. These extra steps help ensure that the capsule passes through the stomach intact and reaches the intestines before dissolving.

Unfortunately, it didn't work for my noisy stomach issue.

No noticeable help and definite acid response

I am not too happy with the product. As directed I took it on an empty stomach and within a few minutes had symptoms of esophagitis. Had to take an omeprazole and I've been concerned ever since and have stopped taking it. After one week of taking the pills I did not notice any improvement in IBS symptoms.

For some people who are prone to heartburn, peppermint oil, even enteric coated, is simply too strong a muscle relaxant and will cause acid reflux. You may have more tolerance for peppermint tea or candies, or you may have to just avoid peppermint in all forms.

Great products because they work!
Having tried the peppermint caps and the acacia fiber for less than 2 weeks, I,m amazed at how effective these products are! The peppermint capsules are the first product I have ever found that settles my stomach. I take it before dinner and no longer have cramps, churning and gas after I eat. I can't say I enjoy the affects of the capsules, i.e., the warm sensation or the bitter flavor/sensation when they digest. But thankfully it doesn't last long. Helps some, but not what I expected

I have always had a bad problem with gas. I have IBS(c)and I have been using the organic tummy fiber, which I think has helped a lot. I was hoping that by adding the Tummy Tamers I could stop the gas. It has helped some, but has not totally relieved the problem. I take 2/day - one first thing in morning and another around 4 in the afternoon. Even within an hour or so of taking the pill, I still have gas, so it makes me think it just isn't working for me.

You can take up to 3 capsules a day, so I recommend that you try taking a capsule right before going to sleep. Then, the capsule will help to prevent gas and bloating through the following morning.

The product did not work for me!!!

Amazing!

This product has been a true blessing to me.
I have been using this product for several years and it has made a huge difference in my IBS. In order to prevent heartburn, you should take the peppermint capsules one hour before eating or drinking anything. This will prevent the capsules from dissolving in your stomach.

You don't have to take a capsules before breakfast, you could take one at any time of day as long as it is two hours after a meal, and not less than one hour before you eat again. It can also be helpful to take one last thing at night before you go to bed.

If you're unable to take them ata ll, please do return the peppermint capsules to us for a refund.

Helpful, but still have symptoms

I have been using this in conjunction with the acacia fiber and have definitely seen a reduction in my symptoms. The fiber has essentially eliminated my diarrhea, which has been wonderful. The peppermint oil capsules do help, but I still have some symptoms - especially with gas and the associated pain. Perhaps over time I will see more of a difference. I do have issues with acid reflux and had issues with peppermint capsules before. These do occasionally give me some heartburn (even when taken on an empty stomach with limited fluids at least an hour before eating) but it isn't nearly as severe as others I have tried and doesn't always give me heartburn, just sometimes.

For gas, I recommend that you try Heather's Fennel Tummy Tea. Fennel
will quickly relieve gas and bloating. Try drinking 3 or 4 strong cups
right in a row to overwhelm your system with the fennel when you are
experiencing a lot of gas and bloating.

Heather's Tummy Tamers Peppermint Capsules are made with 50% more
enteric coating than the industry standard, which prevents most heart
burn for those who have acid reflux or GERD. Normally, we recommend that
you take the capsules one hour before you eat or drink if you are prone
to heartburn. However, for a small group of people with acid reflux,
they actually do better taking the capsules just 15 minutes before a
meal. You may want to try that once if you are still experiencing heart
burn.

If you ever feel like the peppermint capsules aren't working out for
you, please send them back to us for a refund.

Its helps bloating and cramping for my IBS

Great product but pricey shipping

Love this product, but groaned when had to pay extra for shipping multiple quantities, despite it being a bulk order. The cost of shipping to Canada is not that high to the supplier, so why should the customer have to pay that much?

Too much

I bought a starter pack that came with two bottles of peppermint capsules. I took one capsule, and my stomach became molten lava for a couple of hours. These are too powerful for me. :(

I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing heartburn while taking the peppermint capsules. Please feel free that you are welcome to return both bottles for a full refund.

If you are prone to heartburn, then you should take the capsule on an empty stomach, one hour before you eat. Also, swallow the peppermint capsule with just a mouthful of water. Then, wait to drink anything else for an hour as well. This will prevent the capsule from dissolving in your stomach, which is what causes the heartburn to happen.

I'm not sure about your reference to male hormones - there is nothing in the peppermint oil capsules, or any of our other products, that would have an effect on hormones at all. All of our product ingredients are considered GRAS by the FDA, which means they do not have restrictions on their use in foods, beverages, or supplements for adults and children.

If you are taking any medications (prescription or OTC), please ask your doctor and pharmacist about possible interactions with the peppermint capsules. This is the only thing I can think of that may play into hormonal issues. I am not aware of any interactions between medications and the peppermint oil caps, but it is always best to check with your doc about your specific medication/supplement use to be sure.

If you can't use the caps, please do return for a full refund.

This along with the tummy fiber has done wonders for me. I accidently hit enter on my review of the tummy fiber but it is the most help in controlling my bowel movements. I only take two teaspoons a day. I don't know if I need to take more or not. The peppermint caps also help a lot but only take them before a meal. I was cramping one evening and took one without a meal and I felt like I was made out of peppermint. They are strong. I tried another product that was very expensive from another website and it did nothing at all. I am glad I found this.

Hi Anthony - Thank you so much for your feedback. I do feel pretty confident that I know the reason for this issue, and can reassure you that there is no problem.

We have the peppermint oil capsules manufactured to our specifications, which include 50% more enteric coating than the industry standard, as well as a non-stick coating on top of the enteric coating to help keep the gels from clumping together. Both of these coatings have an odd, chemical kind of smell, which dissipates fairly quickly after the caps are made, especially as they are exposed to air.

Typically, we have had capsules made in runs of several million, which we then package over a period of several months. This has meant that by the time we package most of the capsules, the odd smell has had a chance to dissipate. However, our Tummy Tamers sales have now increased to the point that we are having the capsules manufactured, and then immediately packaging the entire run as soon as we receive them. This means the caps are being bottled air tight almost immediately after manufacturing. The smell has no chance to dissipate until the bottle itself is opened.

If you look closely at the capsules, you'll also probably notice that they look dull, grayish, and maybe even slightly rough or pebbly. That is the coatings. Those coating naturally dissipate over time, and eventually they can't withstand the peppermint oil (which gradually surfaces through the gelatin). At that point the capsules will look shiny, brown, and much prettier. They might also smell like peppermint. They are still safe and effective to use, but the risk of heartburn would be much greater as the enteric coating will have dissipated so much.

Please leave your bottles open for a few days and see if the smell disappears. It is ironic that the prettier and nicer the caps look and smell, the older they actually are. The stronger that odd smell, and the duller they look, the more intact the coatings are, as the gels are very new.

I am always surprised at how fast my orders are sent to me.

The verdict is still out
I've been taking these for about one week consistently, just one a day. I've noticed that on some days I burp them hours after I've taken it and on other days nothing. I'm not sure why they would be inconsistent in that area but it doesn't bother me so I keep taking them. I'm not really sure if they are doing anything -- some days my tummy feels great and other days it still goes crazy. But it seems to be more stable than before but I'm not sure if that is due to the fiber and fennel tea I'm taking as well. I'm thinking of running a couple experiments on myself to see what happens. :)

I have been using the peppermint oil pills for over four years now and they along with the acacia fiber have a life saver. Peppermint Caps have helped!
I've been taking one capsule before a meal and then following with the Peppermint tea. This seems to be a very good combination for me - though everyone is unique. This is a great way to prepare myself before a meal. Taking 30 minutes to a hour before works great.

Hoping for remission

I am hoping that these will help me get back into remission, or get cured. I don't feel that they are as strong as they used to be. I used to notice them when I had a bowel movement, now I don't notice any peppermint feeling, or coolness or burning with a bowel movement. I wonder if the product is not as strong, or if I have adapted to them? I used to have occasional burning in my stomach if I took too much water with them too. Not recently.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of our Peppermint Oil Capsules. We appreciate the high scores that you have given to our speed of delivery, customer service and product.
The lack of peppermint feeling means the enteric coating is working! The peppermint oil capsules are now made with more enteric coating to prevent that burning sensation in your stomach when drinking too much water with the Tummy Tamers. The formula and strength of the capsules have not changed; the only changes made to the product have been to the enteric coating. If you first bought them several years ago, and have just tried them again, you may be noticing the lack of side effects because the extra enteric coating is doing its job.
The coating does not affect the strength of the caps or their positive effects on relaxing the gut, so you should still be getting all the good benefits without the bad side effects.

Feel free to also go up to 2 or 3 a day if are currently taking just 1 per day and that’s not enough.

Our Tummy Tamers will help prevent abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, and urgency from IBS. If you are looking for quick relief (versus prevention) of bloating and gas we would recommend trying some of our Fennel Tummy Tea.

I would be careful with the kale juicing. There may be elements like FODMAPS or sulfurous compounds in concentrated amounts of green veggie juice. This could trigger gas, bloating, and possibly even cramps if you have IBS. You may have good results adding the Fennel Tummy Tea right to your juice. Or, you may want to try smoothies with the green veggies where you can add soluble fiber elements to keep your digestion stable (bananas, cooked oatmeal, the Acacia Tummy Fiber, etc.)
