Wrong product for my problem
It turned out I am gluten intolerant and my stomach pain went away when I stopped eating wheat products. It is really hard to rate the effectiveness of the peppermint pills because of this.

no difference...

I've tried about 30 days with all possibilities (1 hour before breakfast, 10 minutes before breakfast,etc..), but there is no difference. The only thing that makes difference is diet... but for me, I can eat milk product without crisis. Accupuncture have made a big diffence too, 15 years ago, I had to take about 10 imodium per day, because after each meal I had diarea, now it happens about once per week, mostly when I go to restaurant. So I think it's mostly stress who gives me diahrea. sorry for my english. and I am happy that this product help people who have this problem, but for me, it makes no difference. bye bye, I'm near Montréal. :-)

As far as the dairy goes, even though you may not see immediate flare ups from it, I do think it may be triggering your diarrhea symptoms. Check out this article from one of our previous newsletters about dairy products here: http://www.helpforibs.com/news/newsletter/06/020706.html#askheather . I would try eliminating dairy for a while (there are lots of non-dairy alternatives, like soy, rice, or almond milk) and see if you see improvement. My guess is that you will!

NO MORE SEVERE ATTACKS

Hello Heather. I cannot say enough good things about the products I purchased. My husband suffered so badly from IBS that he feared leaving home, and pretty much did not. About a year and a half ago, I discovered your web site, and since his doctor pretty much gave up on anything except the Rx he gave him, decided to try the Peppermint Caps and late the fiber. Thanks to these products, his life totally changed in about a week. Since then, he has an incident once a month or less and is free to live his life, and instead of taking the med from 4x per day, he's down to 2 and will further reduce it to just once very soon. Hello Jennifer,

I am so sorry you were getting indigestion from the Tummy Tamers. Peppermint is contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we use 50% more enteric coating than the industry standard because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening.

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

On a related note, not being able to tolerate the enteric coated peppermint oil capsules because they are dissolving in the stomach and causing heartburn or peppermint burping might indicate low stomach acid. In naturopathic medicine, heartburn is often thought to be caused by low stomach acid which causes the undigested food to sit in the stomach too long and create pressure. It can also contribute to inadequately digested protein in the stomach. This can disrupt the digestive process downstream as well. If you followed the tips I listed above and still experienced heartburn, you might want to follow up with a provider to test your stomach acid levels. A naturopath or nutritionist would probably be the best type of provider to address this for you.

The other thing that can cause some people to have to difficulty using the peppermint oil capsules is a sensitivity to the natural compounds in peppermint such as salicylates. The peppermint oil is very concentrated and contains a higher amount of these natural compounds than you would consume in a cup of tea. People who have a sensitivity seem to experience burning in the intestines when they take the peppermint caps. It may come as a surprise because until the peppermint capsules, they've probably never noticed a sensitivity like this because they've honestly never consumed the compounds in this amount before.

This is my 4th day of taking caps. I've taken 2 a day on an empty stomach - one when I get up in the morning and then another at some point in the day after I've waited two hours since my previous meal. I also wait at least an hour before eating again. I take with a few sips of cool water but I think I'm beginning to have discomfort in my throat. I hope heartburn isn't returning. How long does one have to wait after taking the pill before normal drinking? If I'm exercising or whatever, I like to drink a glass of water or other liquid.

If you would like to try the Tummy Tamers again, here are a few tips that may help:

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

I would love to provide a review on the peppermint caps – I've suffered with an IBS-D episode for almost a year off and on and tried numerous prescriptions, change in diet etc…within 4 days of taking the peppermint caps, the pain, bloating and diarrhea has significantly decreased! I do suffer from GERD and follow the instructions by taking an hour before I eat. While I will occasionally get mild heartburn, it is NOTHING compared to what I have dealt with over the last months. A life saver!!!
Before I started using this product, I was chronically contipated for years! An enema was my best friend. (How sad) My doctors all told me to eat more fruits and vegetables, drink more water, and take a fiber supplement. Well, I don't need to tell you that it did very little to help. Once I started taking the peppermint capsules my bowel calmed and I was able to go on my own. I take them daily for maintenance. Not so good...

My husband decided he wanted to try something new for his constant pain and discomfort from IBS. I found these highly recommended pills online and he decided to try them. After just a couple of days, he was in even more pain and discomfort than he had been in a long time. At first we thought they were gonna work but they didn't, and now he is stuck with constant pain and discomfort until we can find something else.

Peppermint is actually contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we use 50% more enteric coating than the industry standard because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening.

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. And he may be one of those folks who just does better with high volatile oil teas, like the fennel, instead of the concentrated volatile oil in the caps. I love to use the caps as a preventative before meals, but if my stomach is full or I need immediate help I much prefer the teas!

She may be able to tolerate peppermint tea, which is not as strong as the concentrated oil in the peppermint caps. Or she may have to stick to soluble fiber foods and a soluble fiber supplement to help keep the spasms and cramps at bay. She could also try fennel tea, as that is an anti-spasmodic (though not as strong as peppermint) but it does not carry any risk of reflux.

Great quality , but the peppermint doesn't help as well as the fennel. Sometimes I think the caps make IBS worse.

Hi Alta - I'm so sorry you're not happy with the peppermint caps. Is it a hearburn/reflux issue you are having with them?

Peppermint is actually contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we use 50% more enteric coating than the industry standard because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening.

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

If you are still unable to tolerate the caps, please return them to us (opened is fine) for a full refund.

And you may be one of those folks who just does better with high volatile oil teas, like the fennel, instead of the concentrated volatile oil in the caps. I love to use the caps as a preventative before meals, but if my stomach is full or I need immediate help I much prefer the teas!

Best Solution to IBS!!!
I haven't found a better product for helping me have less (almost eliminating) stomach aches than these peppermint pills! I've been on meds before and tried all sorts of things with no avail. I believe your products have saved me from an unnecessary hysterectomy!
Back in May I ordered the peppermint oil capsules and the one-pound bag of tummy fiber, and I am SO glad I did! No Satisfication

I received your product in a timely manner. For the record I have been suffering with IBS for about 4 years now. I suffer from really bad acid reflux. I tried your product as soon as I received it. The product gave me no satisfication actually it made my symptoms worse. It did not prevent the pain, cramping,gas or bloating.

You may be able to tolerate peppermint tea, which is not as strong as the concentrated oil in the peppermint caps. Or you may have to stick to soluble fiber foods and a soluble fiber supplement to help keep the spasms and cramps at bay. You could also try fennel tea, as that is an anti-spasmodic (though not as strong as peppermint) but it does not carry any risk of reflux.

Hi there,

Once you really start to understand what causes the IBS it will make a lot more sense. The 2 key strategies we recommend to get the constipation or diarrhea to stabilize involve dietary changes to address the triggers that are affecting the dysregulation of the nervous system in the gut that controls the motility (frequency – too slow or too fast) and soluble fiber (acacia is the most tolerable for IBS) to help address the consistency of the bowel movements. The dietary triggers are the same for both diarrhea and constipation IBS, the individual just responds differently by either slowing down or speeding up the motility. Removing the dietary triggers for a while will allow the gut nervous system to calm down and ease the dysregulation that affects the motility. Once it is calmed down, the frequency will begin to normalize and you can then carefully start bringing things back into the diet following all of the tips Heather talks about in her books to prevent IBS from getting irritated again. To get the best results you should tackle IBS with both approaches……diet for normal motility/frequency and acacia for normal consistency. The fennel (for gas/bloating) and the peppermint caps and teas (for pain associated with cramping and spasming) are to help you manage the associated symptoms that often come along with IBS. The peppermint is soothing and calming to the dysregulated and hypersensitive nervous system in the colon. They are designed to calm things down before the food gets there to prevent any trigger foods in the meal from causing a flare up of the IBS nervous system dysregulation. Soluble fiber also works like a cushion between your colon and these trigger foods to help minimize the effect and in turn minimize the chances of aggravating IBS.

Taking too much acacia too fast can cause increased gas and bloating. Acacia is one of the lowest gas-forming fibers out there and going slow makes the gas issue totally avoidable. Please be patient because this really does work.

We recommend starting with ½ teaspoon twice a day (daily dose of 1 teaspoon). You can split the daily dose up as many time as you like throughout the day, just divide it by 2 or 3 depending on the frequency you prefer. Try to increase the dose every 4th day or so by a teaspoon (add this to the daily dose). If you get increased gas and bloating by jumping the dose up by a teaspoon, try cutting this in half. Some people with IBS are so sensitive they have to go up at ¼ teaspoons every 4th day. Keep stepping up the dose every 4th day or so until you find a dose that resolves your constipation and/or diarrhea. Constipation is usually resolved with a daily dose of 4-5 tablespoons/day and diarrhea/loose stools usually resolves at a lower dose of 1-3 tablespoons/day. You shouldn’t take more than 5 tbsp/day. The maintenance dose is different for each person depending on their specific symptoms. Dietary changes are often necessary to make lasting changes. In the beginning until you stabilize, it works best to take the acacia before each meal to minimize the effect of trigger foods in the meal and to calm the intestines before the food arrives.

I would suggest reading both of Heather’s books so you can thoroughly understand all the ways to help stabilize IBS. The diet and soluble fiber will work more with the cause and help to stabilize you. Acacia helps people with diarrhea to have formed bowel movements and people with constipation to have softer and easier to pass bowel movements. People often experience significant improvement within a couple weeks when they make the dietary and fiber changes at the same time; although, constipation does take longer to resolve than diarrhea. It is not uncommon for constipation folks to increase the acacia very slowly because they are more likely to have trouble with painful gas and bloating. It can take 1-2 months to work up to the daily dose of 4-5 tablespoons/day sometimes. It will only make you miserable if you increase the dose too quickly. Important changes are taking place inside the colon as the body adjusts, so just be patient and let your body gently adjust to the acacia. Constipation folks will often need to continue to use whatever methods they were using previously to keep things moving until they are able to work up to the 4 tablespoons/day dose or so. Please don’t stop everything cold turkey and make yourself sick because this will take some time. The overwhelming feedback I hear from people is that once they reach this dose it is a magical experience and they are able to stop relying on the other medications etc they have always needed to have a normal movement at least once a day.

On a related note, not being able to tolerate the enteric coated peppermint oil capsules because they are dissolving in the stomach and causing heartburn or peppermint burping might indicate low stomach acid. We learned to use enteric coated capsules as an informal way to assess whether the stomach acid was adequate. If the stomach acid is high enough, they should not dissolve until they reach the intestines where the acid is low. This means you shouldn’t burp up anything or have any upper GI complications at all. In naturopathic medicine, heartburn is often thought to be caused by low stomach acid which causes the undigested food to sit in the stomach too long and create pressure. It can also contribute to inadequately digested protein in the stomach. This can disrupt the digestive process downstream as well. If you followed the three tips I listed above and still experienced heartburn, you might want to follow up with a provider to test your stomach acid levels. A naturopath or nutritionist would probably be the best type of provider to address this for you.

The other thing that can cause some people to have to difficulty using the peppermint oil capsules is a sensitivity to the natural compounds in peppermint such as salicylates. The peppermint oil is very concentrated and contains a higher amount of these natural compounds than you would consume in a cup of tea. People who have a sensitivity seem to experience burning in the intestines when they take the peppermint caps. It may come as a surprise because until the peppermint capsules, they’ve probably never noticed a sensitivity like this because they’ve honestly never consumed the compounds in this amount before.

Not Sure What to Think

I've tried the peppermint capsules for a couple of months now, and I'm not sure why but they actually seem to make my symptoms worse in certain ways. I don't have heartburn, so that is not the issue. They do help with the feeling of urgency, but it's like they stir up air in my stomach, and end up causing pain. Even peppermint tea has that effect on me. I prefer Chamomile- it seems to have a very calming effect every time. I'm not sure why they would affect me differently, since both herbs are supposed to be beneficial and calming. I may keep trying the peppermint capsules, but so far they pretty much just seem to make things worse. I end up with more pain and intestines that do not feel calm at all. And I do follow the directions exactly. I am very very pleased with the service and website however! It is such an excellent IBS resource- I am very grateful to have found it.

I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing problems with the Peppermint Capsules.

Peppermint is contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we doubled the enteric coating on our peppermint caps because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

Peppermint caps

I am trying different ways to use the peppermint caps. They seem to cause a lot of heartburn, more than I usually have. I am also sorry the Tummy Tamers Peppermint Capsules are upsetting your heartburn. The capsules are enteric coated so they will pass through your stomach intact and dissolve in your intestines. They should not dissolve in your stomach at all, and certainly should not cause loose bowels (they should actually be helpful for this, and preventing/relieving urgency and diarrhea).

Did you take a capsule on an empty stomach with just enough cool water to swallow? The enteric coating is acid resistant but water soluble, so if you take the cap with a lot of water, or if it sits too long in your stomach because your stomach is full, the capsule can eventually dissolve. We've also found the enteric coating is particularly susceptible to hot water, so you don't want to take the capsules with tea or another hot beverage.

I can't seem to get this capsule not to break up in my stomach

If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2)The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3)Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they’ll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4)You shouldn’t take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

Fantastic Product

Hi Robert - I am so sorry this happened. The capsules are enteric coated so they will pass through your stomach intact and dissolve in your intestines. They should not dissolve in your stomach at all, and certainly should not cause loose bowels (they should actually be helpful for this, and preventing/relieving urgency and diarrhea).

Did you take a capsule on an empty stomach with just enough cool water to swallow? The enteric coating is acid resistant but water soluble, so if you take the cap with a lot of water, or if it sits too long in your stomach because your stomach is full, the capsule can eventually dissolve. We've also found the enteric coating is particularly susceptible to hot water, so you don't want to take the capsules with tea or another hot beverage.

This product works better than prescription drugs for my carcinoid syndrome.
Rather than IBS, I suffer from symptoms caused by hormonal secretions from a rare carcinoid tumor of the small intestine. Many of the symptoms are similar to those of IBS - diarrhea, gas, intestinal spasms, etc. Your products relieve these better than prscription drugs I have tried.
