Heather's is great!

I took the Peppermint cap one hour before sampling most of the food at a buffet dinner. Although I was careful, I did imbibe in some "forbidden " items. I had no problem at all later or even the next day and the next. The caps really work!!!!!

not the right choice for our family

Unfortunately, this was the wrong product to buy for my daughter's bloating and gas because of the inflammation in her stomach. The pills irritated her stomach and caused pain.

Relief at last!

Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

good, not perfect

I find that I suffer heartburn occasionally, mostly first thing in the am after taking the peppermint caps. I also take a medication for acid reflux - I have for more than 10 years I take the 2 together as the instructions advise people with acid reflux, it is best taken 1 hour before eating. ironically, it seems to dissipate after eating.........any suggestions to avoid the frequent heart burn symptoms? I take the peppermint caps primarily for the fennel component as I loathe the taste of fennel and had to discontinue use of the tea for that reason........ Is there a fennel cap to replace the tea?

At this time we do not have any fennel-only oil capsules to offer, only that which is included in the peppermint capsules. If you have the fennel tea, try changing the taste by adding some natural sugar, honey, or combining it with the peppermint tea. Tea combinations are especially delicious!

Did not work for me!

Heather's products are great. Delivery was so fast. The peppermint capsules did not work for me. I have had IBS for years. Hoping for spasm relief. Back to the Dr.

Hi Richard - I am so sorry to hear this! The peppermint oil caps are really potent, and should work well to prevent painful spasms. If you're not prone to heartburn, you can likely tolerate the full dose of three capsules per day.

We even have a handful of customers who have no heartburn issues, who are really prone to sudden, severe IBS attacks of pain and cramps, who use the capsules two at a time.

You may want to try raising the dose on these, and doing three caps a day, every day, or even give the two caps at a time a shot (assuming you don't have heartburn issues).

If they just aren't working for you, please don't hesitate to return them at any time for a full refund.

I'm sorry to hear that the peppermint capsules did not have their desired effect.

The capsules work best when taken on an empty stomach with as little water as possible to swallow it about an hour before eating, or 2 hours after eating. This way, the capsules can get all the way through the stomach before the coating dissolves, and the oil can coat the lining of your system. That should prevent abdominal cramping, spasms, bloating, and gas.

Just recently started using Heather's products and reading her books to help control this ibs-d. So far I am already seeing improvement with less gas and diarrhea. These are the greatest - I take one with small sip of water while still in bed (mornings) then listen to CD's for IBS - improvement has been slow - but now so much better, IBS is a cruel health issue, Dr's just don't have all information on problem, my nurse practioner helped me also by telling me to try fiber capsules, helped immediately, I have to take a least 12 a day, but to get relief I would try anything to get rid of stabbing pain in mornings in lower tummy.

Hi Michelle - thank you so much for your kind comments! You can use the Tummy Fiber and the peppermint oil caps together. The pep caps are best for preventing pain and spasms, the fiber is best for resolving diarrhea and/or constipation.

You do want to take the caps on an empty stomach, so not right with the fiber. The fiber you can just add right into moist foods at meal times, or have in liquids. You do have to start with a low dose of Tummy Fiber and increase gradually, and you need to use it daily (really, it should be taken twice daily for best results, as you want to keep your gut filled with soluble fiber).

The pep caps are much more a take-as-needed treatment. You can take them every day, or just on days when things aren't going well. They are different from the fiber in that regard, as the fiber really needs continuous use, and you have to gradually get your fiber dose up to the level that works for you.

The info in the books is compatible with the caps and the fiber, so definitely add that in without worry!

Peppermint oil pills work great!!
I would like to say...I am so happy. The peppermint oil pills seem to be working and since I have started taking them I have had no spasms. My gut feels more relaxed. Just having no spasms is such a relief as I was in very much pain. I usually take two a day. I still do have gas...but that is minor compared to the spasms,nausea,diarrhea...etc. THANK YOU. Your product seems to be working great for me except for a little heartburn at times.

I am happy with your product, but I do have another concern. Hi Karen - I am so sorry you experienced GERD after taking the Tummy Tamers.

When we developed the Tummy Tamers, we formulated them specifically for the special needs of people with IBS.

Our first concern is that people with IBS are statistically more prone to heartburn, and peppermint is contraindicated for people with heartburn, GERD, and reflux. We have tried very hard to work around this problem, however.

The Tummy Tamers capsules are enteric coated, which allows them to pass through the stomach without dissolving until they reach the small intestines. This enteric coating is resistant to stomach acid.

In fact, we use fifty percent more than the industry standard amount of enteric coating on our Tummy Tamers, to allow as many people as possible to use them for IBS without aggravating any upper GI issues.

Peppermint is contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we use 50% more enteric coating than the industry standard because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening.

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. I am sorry that the peppermint oil capsules did not work as quickly as you had expected.

The capsules work best when taken on an empty stomach with as little water as possible to swallow it about an hour before eating, or 2 hours after eating. This way, the capsules can get all the way through the stomach before the coating dissolves, and the oil can coat the lining of your system. This should prevent abdominal cramping, spasms, bloating, and gas.

If you find that the peppermint capsules aren't working for you, you can return them for a refund. You might consider trying the Peppermint or Fennel teas as more immediate relief of symptoms.

Heartburn from Peppermint Oil Caps

This is the first product that I've tried from Heather's IBS. Unfortunately, it kicked off the worst heartburn I've had in years!! It's really thrown me into a state, and I'm still trying to resolve it. WARNING to people who have hiatal hernias: you can't take peppermint oil because it relaxes the sphincter in the diaphragm causing GERD/gastroesophageal reflux --heartburn. A WARNING should be put on this product for people with GERD or hiatal hernias. It does relax the smooth muscles in the colon and take away the pain of IBS, but one isn't looking to exchange one problem for another.

On a related note, not being able to tolerate the enteric coated peppermint oil capsules because they are dissolving in the stomach and causing heartburn or peppermint burping might indicate low stomach acid. In naturopathic medicine, heartburn is often thought to be caused by low stomach acid which causes the undigested food to sit in the stomach too long and create pressure. It can also contribute to inadequately digested protein in the stomach. This can disrupt the digestive process downstream as well. If you followed the tips I listed above and still experienced heartburn, you might want to follow up with a provider to test your stomach acid levels. A naturopath or nutritionist would probably be the best type of provider to address this for you.

The other thing that can cause some people to have to difficulty using the peppermint oil capsules is a sensitivity to the natural compounds in peppermint such as salicylates. The peppermint oil is very concentrated and contains a higher amount of these natural compounds than you would consume in a cup of tea. People who have a sensitivity seem to experience burning in the intestines when they take the peppermint caps. It may come as a surprise because until the peppermint capsules, they've probably never noticed a sensitivity like this because they've honestly never consumed the compounds in this amount before.

I must commend you on your product, Tummy Care capsules with peppermint.
Heather, I have had IBS since I was in my twenties and now I am 68. I have been on Doxepin for IBS for over 33 years. I also have GERD, which is controlled with medicine. I must commend you on your product, Tummy Care capsules with peppermint. For the first time, for as long as I can remember, my bloating, cramping, and diarrhea relating to my IBS, are virtually gone. I can now lie in bed at night without my stomach making all sorts of noise. I am still gassy, but that is a minor issue considering where I have been with my IBS. I usually only take one before dinner. That is the worst time for my IBS. I am going to pass your information on to my Dr. who I see this month for my annual checkup. I am so sorry you have not seen relief from the Tummy Tamers or the Fennel Tummy Tea!

With the Tummy Teas you may have to drink many cups a day - just at first! - to almost "overwhelm" your system with the tea to really kick out the bloating and gas. Drink the tea till you're sick of it! Then you can drop down to a more reasonable amount.

If you decide the Tummy Tea or the Tummy Tamers are just not working for you, please feel free to return them for a full refund.

I do have some tips for using the caps if you'd like to try them, as they can be a little finicky.

Start with one cap per day, and work up to 2-3 per day if needed. They work best taken in advance of anticipated trouble - before restaurant meals, last thing at night before bed if mornings are rough, etc.

Also try:

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

The capsules did not help me.

I was pleased to note that the capsules functioned as advertised, i.e., they did not open too early, so I was spared heartburn (I have GERD). Unfortunately, not only did the capsules not help, they made my IBS symptoms worse. I had to stop taking them.

Not What I Was Hoping For

I can't say whether these made any difference for my bowel issues, which are more related to shortened bowels from past Crohn's resections than they are to IBD. Having to take the pills on an empty stomach was a problem as was the mild indigestion that came with them and the peppermint flavored belches that stuck with me for a good hour at least. On the plus side, there were no other bad side effects. But I didn't really notice any good effects either. Several days in I experienced my annual severe abdominal pain episode and decided to stop taking these pills just in case they played a role in triggering it. I was really enthused about these after reading all the great reviews. It's back to the drawing board in my case.

When the bowels are shortened it is hard to know if the enteric coated capsules will work as they should. The other thing that can cause some people to have to difficulty using the peppermint oil capsules is a sensitivity to the natural compounds in peppermint such as salicylates. The peppermint oil is very concentrated and contains a higher amount of these natural compounds than you would consume in a cup of tea. People who have a sensitivity seem to experience burning in the intestines when they take the peppermint caps. It may come as a surprise because until the peppermint capsules, they've probably never noticed a sensitivity like this because they've honestly never consumed the compounds in this amount before.

You may want to try our Peppermint Tummy Tea for abdominal pain relief. It is medicinal strength, but the peppermint is not as concentrated as the Peppermint Oil Capsules.

The maximum dose on the capsules is 3 in a day, so if he can make it work in his schedule to do the 3rd one,that might help. They do need to be taken on an empty stomach, so about 2 hours after eating, or 15 minutes to an hour before eating.

The other thing I would recommend would be peppermint or fennel tea. Peppermint will help with pain and urgency, the fennel with bloating and gas. Or, any form of peppermint, like Altoids mints can help if tea isn't an option.

Great Results
I have been suffering from IBS for about 20 years , I'm now 46 . Not sure if it helps or not.

Hi Judy - I'm so sorry you're having mixed results. Bloating seems to be the most difficult IBS symptom to manage. It can help to take 3 pep caps a day, every single day, for at least a week. If you have the Fennel Tummy Tea as well, which is specifically for bloating and gas, drink as many cups of tea per day for the first several days as possible. If you can 'overwhelm' your gut for the first few days that can help get on top of the bloating and gas.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent heartburn or stomach/throat discomfort from the peppermint oil:

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

If you still have problems please don't hesitate to return the caps, opened or unopened, for a full refund. If pain is your major issue, you may have better results from the Peppermint Tummy Tea. It's not as powerful as the peppermint oil capsules, but you can take it on a full stomach, and it works more quickly than the caps (the caps are a better preventative).

I'm not yet positive this product works for me.

I started taking these over 3 years ago to help relieve IBS symptoms before meals. I use them as directed and as needed and they have been effective at relieving gas and associated discomfort when my stomach is empty. I also use Acacia Senegal Tummy Fibre before all meals to help prevent symptoms. Earlier this year my symptoms got worse and I'm working with a Nurse Practitioner to improve my digestive process. I told her about the above items and she was pleased to get the information. In the last few months, I've had problems with stomach disturbances during the night, especially after about 4:00am. When that happens, I take a Peppermint Capsule and get relief within 15 - 30 minutes, which allows me to get back to sleep. The relief lasts for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or longer. I sometimes need another capsule before it's time to get up. Bottom line is they work well and I've had no unpleasant side effects. My recent order was for the bulk package of 6 bottles because I'm using more of them and the pricing is better.

Hi Ben,

Peppermint is contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we use 50% more enteric coating than the industry standard because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening.

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

After quite a bit of research, I chose Heather's Tummy Care for the natural, unflavored organic Acacia Senegal.
