There are two kinds of fiber, insoluble and soluble. Insoluble is a stimulant and can set off IBS symptoms, and if you have strictures it can cause intestinal blockages.

Soluble fiber won't do that - it can't. It's not a stimulant, it's a bowel motility regulator. It can't cause blockages, diarrhea, or constipation, but it also will not help you until you gradually work up to enough of it in your gut, 24/7, to regulate motility. In the meantime, everything else will keep impacting your gut and you will likely keep fluctuating day to day. The tummy fiber is 100% soluble fiber, it can't make anything worse, but it also will not help you with just the first dose or two, or first few days or two. For constipation, it likely won't help the first week or two either. This is because you are starting at a low dose that won't do anything at all, it is just to get your gut used to more fiber gradually. All fibers are indigestible, so you always want to increase fiber slowly and steadily,

Do not skip doses, do not jump your dose up and then down and then up and then down, do not skip days - none of this will work. This is a process, it can't be erratic, it takes some time and patience, and you have to follow the process consistently, day in and day out, or soluble fiber will not do what you want it to do.

You need to start with just ½ teaspoon twice daily and then gradually increase. Add an extra ½ teaspoon to just one of your doses, every 3-4 days. So add an extra ½ teaspoon to your morning dose, wait 3-4 days and then add an extra ½ teaspoon to your evening dose, wait 3-4 days and then increase your morning dose again, etc. You'll keep following that pattern and gradually work up to the dose your gut needs for normal motility. A rough average final dose for diarrhea is 1-3 Tablespoons per day total, for alternating diarrhea/constipation probably 2-3 Tablespoons per day total, and constipation a likely 3-5 Tablespoons per day total. That shows you the huge dose range, and also how far you will likely have to increase from the starting dose of just ½ teaspoon twice a day.

The fiber cannot make anything worse, but again, until you gradually work up to enough of it in your gut, it won't help you either, because it has to reach the point where it can control your bowel motility. You just will not have enough of it in your gut to affect you at all until you have worked your way far enough into the process.

I will tell you candidly it will probably take you a few months to work up to the dose you would need to resolve chronic constipation, and in the meantime you'll still have symptoms, and you may need to use laxatives if you're already doing that. You should see improvements kick in as you gradually get your dose up around 3 tablespoons per day total, and then you'd keep gradually increasing until you feel stable day and day out. You can't just jump to this dose though - fiber does not work that way. I wish it did! But you have to gradually get your gut used to more fiber, and then reach the point you need for motility regulation. Once you hit that you stay at whatever that dose is, morning and evening, as soluble fiber literally only works when it is physically present in your gut.

Seems to have made a big difference.
I've been using this can of loose soluble fiber for about 3 weeks. Just about 1 teaspoon a day mixed in with yogurt or cereal. And I've stopped hurting and no longer have loose stools. This is coinciding with all home cooked meals, and more walking during stay at home pandemic times, which might also contribute to my gut settling down, but I think the daily soluble fiber and occasional fennel tea are really helping. I was miserable a month ago with gut pain and diarrhia.

This tea tastes so good. Fennel is kind of like licorice. After I drink it pain from gas and tummy gurgling goes away. This can has lots and lots of tea bags in it. I've used it the last 3 weeks, an also the acacia senegal soluble fiber, and my gut pain has decreased markedly.

A rough average final dose for diarrhea is 1-3 Tablespoons per day total, for alternating diarrhea/constipation probably 2-3 Tablespoons per day total, and constipation a likely 3-5 Tablespoons per day total. That shows you the huge dose range, and also how far you will likely have to increase from the starting dose of just ½ teaspoon twice a day.

The fiber cannot make anything worse, but again, until you gradually work up to enough of it in your gut, it won't help you either, because it has to reach the point where it can control your bowel motility. You just will not have enough of it in your gut to affect you at all until you have worked your way far enough into the process.

Fennel Tea, packaging could be improved.

The tea appears to be packaged in fine plastic tea bags, which bags have recently been criticized for leading fine plastic when brewed. I have often been cutting the bags open and brewing in a brewing basket. I can then compost the used seeds. I would like a more environmentally way of packing your teas. I would then give them a 5.

Hi Barbara - we have a new pyramid teabag machine that is meant for running large leaf or whole seed teas. It takes a very special plant fiber mesh film from Japan to make the bags on that machine. The plant fiber film is vegan, biodegradable, compostable, and approved for use with certified organic herbs/teas. We would never, ever use plastic tea film.

The new plant film also allows for a better flow, so you should see the tea brew stronger, faster. The amount of tea per bag and per can has not changed, just the new film. We are adding pics of the new bags to the site, and the cans will have updated film info. It is still chlorine free tea paper, that is technically accurate, but I like to give as much info to people as possible so we will elaborate on that on the site and the packaging.

The new film is also much less prone to tearing as the bags are put in the cans, which was a real struggle with the old paper and the peppermint teabags especially.

Please try the new bags and let us know what you think.

Hi Lynn - I'm so sorry you just had an attack. I hope you are feeling better soon. The tummy fiber is not meant to stop an attack. It is a preventative, and you have to start at a low dose twice daily, gradually increase, and keep slowly increasing until you reach the point where you are stable, and not having attacks. The fiber only works when there is enough of it in your gut to gently force normal motility, and that will prevent attacks from happening.

If you are suddenly hit hard and need immediate help, that's when you need to go to the peppermint tummy tea (for pain, spasms, cramps, urgency) or the fennel tummy tea (for bloating and gas). The teas work very quickly to calm your gut and stop symptoms. The fiber is a daily process and you have to gradually work up to a high enough dose to actively keep your gut calm and prevent symptoms, it is not something you can just take as needed in the midst of an attack as it unfortunately won't work that way. It won't hurt at all, but it won't work the way you are wanting it to.

IT IS WORKING!
My IBS runs from severe diarrhea to constipation and I have despaired of being normal again. But this stuff is working. It is a slow process, building up to being able to take enough to alleviate symptoms, but I am up to a tablespoon a day and my constipation is sloooowly disappearing and I am comfortable again. I have had NO DIARRHEA since I began the regimen and NO CRAMPING! And I am back to successfully eating sourdough bread (my problem is not gluten even though I have been off it for 3+ years on the advice of my gastroenterologist). Even though initially the acacia and the increased soluable fiber bound me up even worse, I have been able to adjust my insoluble fiber intake to begin to return to normal.

Hi Sharon - I am so sorry to hear this. The fennel tea is best for fast help with IBS bloating, gas, and spasms. It won't likely affect other symptoms. It can't hurt, but it also won't resolve issues like diarrhea or constipation.
Brew the tea as strong as you can, and if bloating and gas are the problem try to "overwhelm" your gut with the tea the first few days. Just drink it all day long, as much as you can. That helps get on top of the bloating and then you can drop down to a reasonable amount going forward.
You are also always welcome to return anything, at any time, for any reason. That is never a problem.

Great tasting tea

This is a soothing tea, which I drink at least 4-5 cups a day. Interestingly enough, the tea bags appear to no longer be biodegradable - they are made of a cloth mesh. But the flavor comes through. Also the size of the tea bags aren't as large as before. Maybe with the mesh tea bag the amt of tea can be less. Still great flavor. And great medicinal qualities.

Hi Mary - we have a brand new pyramid tea bag machine that uses a special compostable plant based film. It looks like silk, or a fabric, but it's actually a biodegradable natural fiber mesh that is suitable for use with certified organic teas. It allows for better flow than the previous tea paper and is also less fragile when packing it into the cans.
The size of the teabag is still the same, the net weight of tea per bag and per canister has not changed at all. The only change is the new plant fiber and pyramid teabags, but there are no changes to the raw tea itself, or the quantity we pack.

I like the fennel tea; it helps with gas and bloating.
My favorite products, however, are the tummy fiber and peppermint oil supplements. Using Heather's specific instructions on how to take the proper amount of tummy fiber for my severe IBS-D, I have literally had no diarrhea for the past 4 months. The peppermint supplements are wonderful to calm my colon contractions and they help with pain as well. I started the IBS diet on Jan. 1, 2019 after reading about it on Heather's website. I bought the IBS books(first year and cookbook) in February, and now I can leave the house again to go places. DAILY. I am able to exercise daily. I have lost 60 lbs. and I wasn't even trying to lose weight!! By cutting out red meat, dairy and high fats, and by balancing my soluble/insoluble fiber intake, I feel so much better now!!!! 6 weeks on and definitely noticing change for the better
I have been using this product now for 6 weeks, I started on a low dose ( 1/4 teaspoon ) twice a day and have increased to 1 teaspoon twice a day, it has definitely helped me with urgency and diarrhea, I feel like it has a calming effect on my bowel. Like anything you need to slowly adapt and give it time.

Hi Lynn - it can really help to get on top of the gas by "overwhelming" your gut with fennel tea the first few days. Brew the tea as strong as you can - leave the bag in the cup the whole time you drink it. And just drink as much as you can the first few days or so - all day long if possible. That will get on top of the gas and then you can drop down to a reasonable amount each day, or as needed. Please let me know if this helps.

Hi Rita - I'm so sorry to hear this. The fiber can't cause cramping or diarrhea, soluble fiber is only a motility regulator. But - you also have to have enough of it in your gut to work, and you have to get to that dose gradually. The normal ½ teaspoon twice daily starting dose won't do anything - it's just to get your gut used to more fiber. Then you gradually increase from there - adding an extra ½ tsp to one of your daily doses, every 3-4 days. Lower doses won't make things worse, but they also won't stop diarrhea or prevent other triggers from hitting your gut hard. An average daily dose for diarrhea typically ends up about 1-2 tablespoons per day. Please keep me posted!

Hi Mary - I am so sorry you are struggling. Did you start at ½ teaspoon twice daily? You want to stay there for 3-4 days, and then add an extra ½ tsp to just one of your doses. Wait 3-4 days and then increase your other dose by an extra ½ tsp. Follow that process, go slow and steady, and as you gradually get your fiber dose up it should resolve the frequent BMs. If you go too quickly that can cause gas, so that means drop your dose and go more gradually with increases. Slow and steady will win this race. Please keep us posted.

Hi Patricia! You can substitute for the egg in most of the baking recipes - for the quick breads you could probably just eliminate them, for others try subbing in Ener-G Egg Replacer. You can get this at any grocery store, it's vegan and IBS safe, and works well. For dishes where eggs are the main part (scrambles and such) you could sub silken tofu, mashed with a fork. If there are specific recipes you're struggling with just let me know.

info very helpful; recipes not so much.

I am an older widow living on SS and too many ingredients I would have to drive too far to get. Cooking for one is a challenge. It was obvious you live in a large metropolitan area where it is easy to find things. The information part of the book was very helpful and I am picking up tips from recipes but not too many. And way too many carbs in the desserts for anyone who has to watch weight/sugar intake.

Hi Kathleen - thanks so much for your feedback! Please don't feel restricted by ingredients - you can omit or substitute for things you can't obtain. I actually wrote this book while living in rural New England, with ingredients I'd been able to easily find for years in other areas of the country as well. If there is something specific tripping you up, please let me know and I'll help. I tried to make the recipes as wide ranging and comprehensive as possible, but you can certainly stick to the traditional all-American options and familiar favorites if you wish. You can also halve just about all the recipes to make smaller meals.

Sugar is not a health food, but also not an IBS trigger, so the dessert recipes will use real sugar. It's best to just avoid sweets or stick to small portions if you are limiting sugar - don't replace that with artificial sweeteners, as those are huge GI triggers.

Hi Lori,

I'm so sorry to hear this. People tend to either love or hate the taste of fennel. It really does work well for gas and bloating though, so many people just get creative about how to take it. You can brew it with another herbal tea such as peppermint or chamomile to disguise the flavor (peppermint in particular completely kills the fennel taste).

Using honey as a sweetener really makes it taste better as well. And some folks simply brew it very strong, let it cool, and drink it quickly as they would a medicine.

The fennel is best for IBS bloating and gas. It often works best to "overwhelm" your gut with the tea the first few days. Just drink as much as you can all day long to get on top of the bloating, and then you can drop down to a reasonable amount.

If you still just hate it so much that you can't even drink it, please feel free to return it for a full refund.

Hi Glenda - I'm so sorry you are having trouble. Please know that the Tummy Fiber cannot cause diarrhea (or constipation). It is just 100% soluble fiber, which is a bowel motility regulator. It does have to be used twice daily, and you have to start at a low dose and increase gradually. You continue to increase gradually until you reach the dose you need in your gut to keep motility stable. That may be several teaspoons to several tablespoons per day, total. But you can't start at the dose you'll end up needing to reach, you have to start low and increase gradually.

You may get or continue to have diarrhea until are able to get your fiber dose up to the level you need. It's not a drug, so it will not work overnight. You should see improvements as your dose increases, and then complete resolution of the diarrhea as you continue. Unfortunately, you can't rush the process.

The dessert recipes do use real sugar, as it's not an IBS trigger (though it's also not a health food, so you can simply omit desserts from your diet if you wish). There is little to no sugar in the non-sweet recipes, so please let me know if you have specific concerns/recipes you are asking and I'll try to help. In general, aside from baking (where sugar plays a critical role in the food chemistry) you could certainly just lower the sugar amount or omit it if you wish.

Please do make sure that were using the fiber twice daily, and that you started at a low dose of just 1/2 teaspoon twice daily but gradually increased that every few days. For diarrhea you may have to gradually work up to 1-3 Tablespoons per day total, but if you resolve at a lower dose then just stay there. If you gradually worked up your dosage but just saw no improvements at all, please check in with your GI doc as that could be a red flag for something other than IBS. If this is the case please return the fiber for a full refund, open or not, no time limits at all. If you have dosage questions please just let me know.

This product works
I don't have IBS. I use Heather's acacia fiber for constipation. I am 83 years old. I built up slowly to a little less than 3 Tbs per day. Because of type 2 diabetes, I have to eat a lot of constipating protein, similar to the Keto diet. I could not do without the fiber. It's a lifesaver!
